Fun Electives to Take This Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Auburn chapter.

Spending your summer here in Auburn? Maybe you are working, doing an internship or taking classes. Whatever your plans are, if you need to knock out a few elective hours, here are a few of our favorite courses still available. Silver lining? We’re pretty sure these courses won’t make you want to fall asleep.

This unique class offered during the first mini-mester explores the idea of terror in spanish films. The purpose of the course is to watch contemporary Spanish horror films while discussing their frightening elements. The course is taught in English and is open to all students. This will be an enjoyable class as it’s in an air conditioned room with a big screen. CLA and film studies students are especially encouraged to sign up. If studying scary movies sounds like fun to you, this may be right up your alley. Bring your popcorn and get ready to be spooked! To register, look under FLSP 3130: Special Topics in Hispanic Film or contact Dr. Jorge Munoz at jjm0001@auburn.edu

Do you regularly watch “That 70s Show” or wish you grew up during the height of hippie culture? This summer an RTVF class called American Cinema of the 1970s is available. The course meets during the second mini-mester everyday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. It analyzes the American film industry and the work of 70s filmmakers. To register for the class, look under Special Topics In Media.

Another easy way to get course credit is to find something in physical education. Classes like Active Auburn, Aerobic Dance and Yoga will be sure to keep you in shape. There are a variety of fitness classes still open for registration. Log on to Au Access now to make sure you secure a spot. We can always find time in the day to get a good workout in!

Summer classes can be a huge advantage if you want to get ahead. Even if you have decided to travel or go back home, there are still distance learning classes you can take online. The mini-mesters only last five weeks and the classes are not as big. Students receive more personal attention and after just 25 days you’re done! This is why it’s also a smart idea to take your harder classes. Remember not to overwhelm yourself though as the work is condensed, know and commit to what you can handle. With less traffic and more parking, the Auburn summer schedule is known to be student friendly. Email your advisor to double-check the classes you pursue in order to validate them meeting the requirements of your major.
