Taking on one body of water at a time, our Campus Celeb for this week is Maggie King. She took the time out of her busy Auburn University Rowing schedule to talk the HCAuburn about how she got involved in this crazy cool sport.

How did you get involved with the Rowing team here at Auburn University? My high school in New York had a team and I wanted to join my senior year but was unable to. I saw the Rowing Club’s tent at O-Days last semester and figured I should try it out! I went to the info session and after the first few practices with the team, I was hooked.
What is your favorite part about the sport? There are so many reasons why I enjoy rowing. First of all, I love the team. I love seeing the same people everyday, working out with them, and traveling together to races several times a semester. They truly have become some of my closest friends. It’s also such an amazing experience to be practicing on the water in the mornings and be able to see the sunrise. It’s so relaxing and calmly to be floating on the water in your boat and just watch the colors in the sky change.
What process do girls have to go through in order to join the team? Joining is so easy! Girls of any age and athletic ability can join. Even if they don’t know a single thing about rowing, the team will teach them everything. It’s an amazing experience and I recommend everyone try it out. Rowing is a great way to meet a great group of people and get fit at the same time.
Outside of Rowing, are there other organizations on campus that you are involved with?  I’m also a part of an organization called Kadettes, the hostesses for the Army ROTC. We plan socials, fundraise, and help out with the Military Ball. I have also applied to be a Resident Assistant for the 2015-2016 academic year and should hear back soon if I will become a part of the Resident Life staff! (FINGERS CROSSED)
The Rowing Club is always looking for new members! Check out their Facebook page, Auburn University Rowing, to see pictures and posts about races and what the team is up to. Catch them on O-Days  (they have the fun table with all the smiling faces and cool t-shirts!). On April 18th and 19th, Auburn Rowing will be competing in a regatta hosted by the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. It’ll be a fun weekend -so make plans to support the team!
