College basketball arguably has a greater following than college football. However, this is definitely not the case in the SEC (well at least for the Western schools). Its as if we need the rest of the year after football season to recuperate. For schools like Kentucky or Tennessee, a successful basketball season may be all they have to look forward to (at least in recent years). Maybe a large part of our disinterest in our basketball is because, well to be honest, we haven’t been very impressive.
But there is good news! In head coach Tony Barbee’s second season at Auburn, he has improved our record to 12-7 at this time in the season. This year, our student section, named “The Jungle” was officially opened on January 11, 2012 with more students present at the game against its debut game (against Kentucky) than any other game at our Auburn Arena.
I’ll fill y’all in on some tips to start enjoying Auburn Basketball.
Here are our starters:
? PG 11 Josh Wallace (So) 5’10 160 1.2 PPG
? SG 1 Andre Malone (So) 6’5 210 1.7 PPG
? SF 2 Allen Payne (Fr) 6’6 205
? SF 22 Kenny Gabriel (Jr) 6’8 190 1.8 PPG
? C 41 Rob Chubb (So) 6’10 222 1.3 PPG
Rob Chubb seems to be our break-out star, and while he will admit he still has room for improvement, when Chubb has been on the floor this season, Auburn has outscored its opponents by 116 points. When he is on the bench, opponents have turned the tables by 113 points. He is only a sophomore, and we have many exciting stars coming up. Auburn Basketball is about to be the next big thing, so get on your feet in “The Jungle” and check it out!
