Anti-Celebrity: The Referees of the SEC

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Auburn chapter.

The current football season has been nothing short of struggle because of the calls made by the black-and-whites that officiate every game. There have been more than a few questionable calls made on the field, sometimes making it impossible for us to achieve victory.

If you’ve been in the student section at all this season you’ve almost been impaled by a flying shaker, susceptible to the obnoxious chants of “BULLsh*t” and other forms of hate slung at the referees. Our beloved Tigers have managed to overcome the roadblocks put up by the SEC officials.

We didn’t see any love from the refs at this past week’s game against Ole Miss, but we’ve experienced a lot of questionable calls in the previous games of the season. The most heartbreaking came in the Mississippi State game on October 10th.

The Call that Set the Stage For DefeatThe refs that officiated the only loss of the season at Mississippi State made a call that Coach Gus Malzahn labeled “the worst call he’s ever seen”. Star player Sammie Coates caught a 68-yard reception, but the officials labeled it offensive pass interference. Check out the video here and see if you agree!

And we’re not exactly biased as members of the Auburn family. Even sports officials are taking notice to the bad officiating in the SEC. Click here to see the opinions of someone who actually knows a thing or two about sports.
