5 Summer Courses You Can Sign Up For Right Now!

Are you going to be in Auburn this summer? Why not add a fun elective to make the time fly by! Still on the fence about taking summer classes? Some of these interesting, exciting and unique classes might make up your mind! So collegiettes, read up and go register because as of today there is space in the following five courses, but judging by the novelty of them that might change quickly!


1) RTVF 3970 – American Cinema of the 1970’s

Date Range: Jun 25, 2012 – Aug 01, 2012
Space Remaining: 11
Catalog Description: Special topics concentration on production, distribution, and exhibition of mass communication.

This class focuses on one of the most interesting decades of the century and explores films made during that time. The class spends time watching and examining movies such as “Jaws.” If you’re a Spielberg fan, or just want to escape to the seventies, add this exciting elective to your summer lineup.

2) HORT 2040 – Organic Gardening
Date Range: May 17, 2012 – Aug 01, 2012
Space Remaining: 17
Catalog Description: Principles, production practices, maintenance, harvesting and marketing of organically and traditionally home-grown vegetables.

Collegiettes, want to add something different to your cooking this summer? How about your own organic vegetables? Learn how to care for and produce healthy and delicious crops in this fun class that has no prerequisites!

3) PHED 1760 – Aquatics: Scuba
Date Range: June 25, 2012 – Aug 01, 2012
Space Remaining: 9
Catalog Description: Basic concepts and physical activities associated with specific aquatic skills. Activities may include, but are not limited to, swimming skills instruction, lifeguard training, and scuba diving. When appropriate, successful completion of the course will lead to Red Cross certification or certification by other agencies.

If you’re going to be in Auburn this summer, why not add some underwater activity to your schedule? Although it’s not quite the same as relaxing at the beach, learning an aquatic sport is a fun way to exercise! There are no prerequisites.
* Special Notes: $160 fee due to Instructor on first day of class. $250/$400 fee for equipment. Some labs located off campus.

4) JRNL 4490 – Literary Journalism
Date Range: May 17, 2012 – June 24, 2012
Space Remaining: 5
Catalog Description: A survey course on the best nonfiction produced by journalists.

If you’ve ever wondered how Truman Capote wrote “In Cold Blood” or what kind of research went into writing “Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test,” this class is for you. Exploring the field of journalism dubbed “new journalism” reporters spend significant amounts of time putting together a non-fiction work based on their findings. This class is open to anyone, not just journalism students and has no prerequisites.

5) HIST 5050 – The South Since 1877
Date Range: May 17, 2012 – June 24, 2012
Space Remaining: 11
Catalog Description: Examination of the South since 1877, with emphasis on social, economic, cultural, political and ideological developments.

Although you may think that history classes can be boring and tend to involve memorizing a lot of facts, times and locations, what’s more fun than learning about the Good Ole South? If you’re a Southern girl, expand your knowledge of your heritage. If you’re from the north, take the chance to get to know the area around you and the rich history of the South. To take this class you must be a junior or senior and the course lists additional prerequisites or departmental approval.

Summer is a currently a senior student at Auburn University. As a journalism major she actively enjoys writing and is the co-founder and current Editor-in-Chief of the Her Campus branch at Auburn, as well as a writer for the Greek newspaper The Odyssey. In addition, Summer is an active member of Kappa Alpha Theta, PRSSA and the Society of Professional Journalists. Summer loves fashion and enjoys blogging about her personal style.
