Single Life Series: The Importance of Dating Yourself

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ASU chapter.

There is nothing like a day filled with activities, food and fun. It’s great when those days are planned by someone you care about and who cares about you, but you should always try to treat yourself first.

One thing that I have learned over the years is that being in a relationship can be a great thing, but the relationship that needs the most nourishment is the one you have with yourself. Yes, putting on a face mask and watching your favorite shows can be great, but sometimes you just need to wine and dine yourself.

We take so much time and thought when we plan dates with significant others or even just hanging out with friends, so why don’t we take the time to intentionally plan a day or even a great few hours to ourselves?

For instance, I am a very extroverted person but I need at least one day a week where I can stay at home, focus, work out, and just unwind. Most of the time I spend it getting things done for school or work. But every once and a while I plan a “Dar Date”, time set aside where I focus on me with no interruption from the outside world. Whether that’s watching a movie with a face mask on, taking a bubble bath or deep conditioning my hair while catching up on YouTube videos.

Regardless of what you do, it is important to treat yourself like the princess you are, because no one looks out for your happiness like you.

Some great ideas:

  • Get a massage

  • Go to a movie alone

  • Do a fashion show of all of your clothes

  • Get a mani-pedi

  • Meditate

  • Go on a hike

  • Rewatch your favorite shows

  • Turn your phone off for a day

Self care is necessary no matter the medium because you know what’s best for you better than anyone else.

At the end of the day, sometimes you need a refresher to remind yourself of who you are and why you are so special.
