Like the average tech-savvy college girl, I check the daily news through my Twitter app. So when the hashtag “Pray for Boston” appeared at the top of the Worldwide Trends list, a dreading feeling came over me. At first I thought there was another tragic shooting at a local college or university, but I was wrong.
The Boston Marathon is an international event where athletes and runners from across the world are joined together to race in the longest running marathon since 1897. Yesterday was a day that began in happiness and excitement only to end in despair and tragedy. The tweets and pictures that were shown online were absolutely devastating. As the runners came close to crossing the finish line, a bomb went off, approximately 10 feet away from the finish line, knocking a 78-year old man off his feet. Then 12 seconds later another bomb down the street went off. According to CNN, there were a total of 3 fatalities and over 144 people injured – doctors had to amputate the limbs of at least 10 victims – and the youngest fatality was only 8 years old.
You can only imagine my reaction to this tragic event when it surfaced the web, because of the recent terror acts that have been taking place as of late. If you have family and friends who were in the Boston area, or know someone who participated in the Boston Marathon, Her Campus ASU keeps them in our hearts and prayers, hoping that the person behind this carnage act will be caught. In the words of Obama, they will, “feel the full weight of justice.”
