Have you ever gone through a breakup and suddenly  the radio plays a song that really hits home with you?? I have had that happen a time or two, whether it be a breakup with a friend or a significant other. Here are five songs on my breakup playlist that make me forget that person ever existed in the first place.

“No Scrubs” by TLC

Not only is this on my breakup playlist, this is on my petty playlist too. Originally released in 1999 by the iconic girl group TLC, this song takes the hatred to a whole new level. The chorus hits my soul and I always sing it way too loud whenever I’m going through a breakup or just a situation where I am being super petty , because no, I actually don’t want a scrub.

“Take A Bow” by Rihanna

How about a round of applause for this song being made. Rihanna released this song in 2008 on what I consider to be one of her best records ever made, Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded. You might recognize this record from songs such as “Disturbia,” “Umbrella,” and “Shut Up and Drive,” but with the Reloaded version you get “Take A Bow” as a bonus track. To say that I haven’t thought about turning the sprinklers on while an ex is picking up their stuff would be a lie. One of the things I appreciate about this song is the brutal honesty of what it feels like to be in a breakup.

“He Wasn’t Man Enough” by Toni Braxton

Released in 2000, this song shows that not everyone is a perfect fit for one another. It’s okay for someone to move on and find happiness with someone else, even when that guy did you wrong and there was no way to fix it. People can learn from their past break ups and change and be better for the next person. This is the song for a situation where it didn’t work out, and he moved on and found happiness with someone other than you.

“Say Goodbye” by Chris Brown

This song by Chris Brown was released on his first record in 2006 and was iconic for its time. It is a slow and sad breakup song about loving someone, but having the  relationship fizzle out while finding  someone new to take your significant other’s place. This is probably one of the sadder and less empowering songs on this list, but sometimes you have to sit in your feelings and grieve. This is definitely the song to do that to.

“Walk Away” by Kelly Clarkson

If I said this song was not the first song I always listen to during a breakup, that would be the biggest lie on the planet. Released in 2006, this song embodies my pettiness and anger all in one. “I waited here like a kid waiting after school so tell me how come you never showed?” I go into full church mode yelling “Yes girl! Sing that song!” This song could play in the grocery store and I would have my moment in an aisle like  no one was watching. This is the song that gets me over everything that has caused me trouble, whether it be a person or a thing.

Some of these songs are slow songs that make you feel some type of way while others can be empowering during a breakup. Nothing gets you over an ex like a great break up song.
