DIY Beauty Remedies for the College Woman

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ASU chapter.

Between school, work, internships, and whatever else college women have going on we barely have any time to think, let alone worry about our beauty regimens. Plus, all that extra primping and plucking takes a toll on our wallets! However… we searched Pinterest for the following tips and DIY beauty secrets that are made with everyday products, and that won’t put a dent in our schedule, nor in our wallets.

Teeth Whitening:

The normal price to get your teeth whitened by a professional ranges from $250 to $1,000, which is borderline depressing to avid coffee drinkers, but for about $10 you can do it yourself!

Ingredients:  ¼ cup of baking soda and juice from half of a lemon.

Directions:

1)   Mix the ingredients together and let it bubble

2)   Dip a cotton ball in the mix and apply to teeth

3)   Leave on for at least a minute

4)   Remove it by brushing teeth!

This is so easy and mess-free that you can even do it in the dorm room!

Perfect Nails:

OK, so aren’t we all guilty of treating ourselves to the totally unnecessary but kind-of-worth-it mani/pedi every once in awhile? Yes. At the time it is fun to get pampered and massaged for a little, but later the $30 to 50$ you don’t have tends to put a dimmer on those glittery nails. Here is a tip that you can use to have those pretty nails without hauling in the big bucks.

For No Mess-ups:

1)   With a Q-tip, apply any greasy lotion or Vaseline around the cuticles (careful not to get it on your nails)

2)   Paint nails and let dry

3)   Rub off the lotion or Vaseline- all the remaining nail polish will come off too and your cuticles will be moisturized!

At Home Facial:

For the days when you are stressed and just feel like the universe doesn’t like you, relaxing at a beautiful spa would be nice… But for most college girls, that is not necessarily in our means. However, with this DIY facial recipe, the spa can come to you!

Ingredients: ¼ cup oats, 1 egg, 1 tbs salt, 2 tbs lemon juice, 1 tbs honey

Directions:

1)   Mix ingredients together in a blender until they turn into a paste

2)   Remove make-up and wash face

3)   Pat dry

4)   Apply to face with fingers and let sit for 20 minutes

5)   Wash off!

Acne Removers:

We all still get the occasional zit, especially around finals week. Here are a few techniques that you can do at home to get rid of our pesky pals.

Eggs:

1)   Crack the egg

2)   Remove yolk and whites

3)   Carefully peel the inner layer of the egg AKA the skin from the shell

4)   Put it on your zits!

*It is supposed to remove impurities from the baby chick, so let it do that to your pimples too!

Aspirin:

1)   Crush 5 to 7 non-coated pills

2)   Put in water to make it a paste

3)   Add a tsp of organic honey

4)   Mix ingredients and spread over zits

*The salicylic acid in the aspirin fights the bacteria in the pimples!

Toothpaste:

Only use this on individual problem spots, and stay away from pastes that have whitening ingredients in it or that prevent tartar! It actually works because of the sulfur in the paste!
