Campus Celebrity: Shawn Berry

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ASU chapter.

You may have seen this friendly face around the various Starbucks Coffee shops around the Tempe campus, but he’s not just the barista making your light iced dirty chai with soy in the afternoon when you need a pick-me up.

Junior, Shawn Berry, is a Computer Science with Statistics and Sustainability major and also works a part-time job at the PV East Starbucks (just recently having transferred from the MU Starbucks). As if that wasn’t enough to keep him occupied, he also writes his own music in his spare time.

“I started in elementary school playing violin, but I’ve only been writing my own music since junior year of high school. Guitar stole my soul and I haven’t really looked back since.”

Berry says he draws inspiration from every day life when it comes to writing his music.

“It’s way easier for me to sit down with a guitar and write something that expresses how I feel instead of trying to think of words to explain it. It’s a release of sorts, plugging into an amp and playing the loudest, most abrasive stuff you can think of- feels about as good as anything on earth.”

Although he’s not signed to a record label, Berry has released a couple albums.

“I released an EP last September called Cambrian and the reception it got was a lot better than I thought it would be. I’m really proud of it and I’m glad some other people thought it was cool too.”

Berry’s second EP, aptly titled EP2, is dropping on February 18th via bandcamp.com.

“The last one was more of a collection of songs I threw together where as this one was recorded with a single idea in mind, so it flows together a lot nicer. And ya know, it’s free, so get it for your ya mom, ya loved ones, ya boyfriend… Listen to that ish while ya in the shower or drivin’ ya kids to school, great for any occasion.”

My name is Alejandra Guillen and I am a junior at Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and at Barrett, the Honors College. As most people do, I enjoy sleep, food (especially of the breakfast, gravy and meat varieties), and Ryan Gosling.
