Business Casual- Surviving the Most Ambiguous of Dress Codes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ASU chapter.

So, we all know the story. Being a dutiful collegiette, you’ve applied everywhere, gotten recommendations, and nailed the interviews. And at last, you’ve finally scored an internship.

At first you are so excited at the possibilities ahead.

But, as the start date looms, you are faced with an unexpected challenge: What in the world are you going to wear?

Then, you get the dreaded dress code news. Business casual. What does that even mean?

Chances are, you don’t have a lot of spare income to blow on new clothes, but you can’t go into this possible launching pad to a career looking like a slob either.

So, here is a guide to help you navigate the deceptively blurry waters that are “business casual”.

First, invest in a couple of blazers. Blazers can be inexpensive at stores like Charlotte Russe and Forever 21, but they can turn any outfit from casual to professional, as if by magic.

Next, find one pair of dress pants. Pants can be a little expensive, so find a pair in a neutral color or black that will match any type of top. Only buying one pair is okay for internships because most likely you only have to go once or twice a week.

Then, raid your closet for button-down shirts or other blouses that you may already own. For the most part, button-down shirts should be worn with a cami underneath to make sure that you always look pulled together, rather than busting out of your buttons.

Utilizing what you already have, such as tights and leggings for underneath skirts,  can not only save you money shopping, but also create a variety of new outfits that are suddenly appropriate.

If you are still in need of some outfits, shop sales to find versatile tops. Try them on with a blazer because tops that may not seem work appropriate can be made much better with a blazer.

After your first day on the job, pay attention to what the other women in your workplace are wearing. Remember, you can never be overdressed, so when in doubt try to err on the side of caution.

Confidence is the best addition to any wardrobe, so make sure you wear it with pride on the first day at your new internship!
