As summer quckily approaches in the Valley of the Sun, it is essential to start thinking of a protective style to keep your hair healthy against the intense heat. With the luxury of having such dynamic afro textured hair, braids will definitely be my personal go-to style. The variety of styles I have on my mind are endless, the only trouble is which one to choose.

If you plan on trying out one of the styles below it is important remember maintence is key in braiding styles. Make sure you oil, mosturize, and condition your scalp in order for you to look flawless all summer long.

1. Box Braids – Made popular by Poetic Justice, these braids can go from long all the way to your hips, to even a short bob. They also make a beautiful bun.

2. Petra Braids – This is a larger version of the box braids that were made popular by Jamacian singer Lady Patra. These braids will give you such a distinct look.

3. Jumbo Side Braid – Inspired by Beyonce’s music video Upgrade You, this simple braid can be done by adding Kanekalon braiding hair.

4. Goddess Braids – This beautiful rendition of cornrows will leave you looking like a goddess.

5. Senegalese Twists – These neat twists are definatly less time consuming than braids, because you use two strands of hair instead of three.

6. Havana/Marley Twists – A kinkier version of senegalese twists, these twists blend great with natural afro textured hair. Be sure to to use Havana or Marley braiding hair to achieve this style.

7. Dreadlock Extensions – This is essentially two styles in one. You first braid hair like box braids and then wrap Kanekalon braiding hair, or even yarn, over it to create the appearence of dread. This style is perfect for those who want to try out dreads without making the commitment.

If you are looking for how to do these styles, YouTube has hundreds of tutorials, but if you are looking to get them professionally done StyleSeat.com can definatley help you find someone accredited nearby.
