Most New Year’s resolutions revolve around people wanting to improve something in their life, whether it’s their health, breaking a bad habit, or pursuing new adventures. This year, I decided that I wanted to focus on improving myself more professionally while remaining the creative person that I am. After seeing blog after blog after blog (and an ad on Facebook, which may have been a sign from higher powers) I finally created a blog. It’s a process that seems easy, but I can tell you from experience that it’s not. I found some helpful Pinterest posts on getting started, so I decided just to dive in. Here’s what I’ve learned so far:

Finding a satisfying blog name is SO much harder than it seems.

This has to be something you really take into consideration. It can’t already be taken. It has to be original. It has to make sense. It has to be catchy. I swear I sat for two hours trying o figure this out but I finally did! I think some helpful tips would be to focus on your theme—what’s the main focus you’re trying to achieve with your blog? Is it a narrow or broad topic? Also keep in mind that wordiness is a turn off when it comes to names. It’s the first impression people are going to get when they reach your page, and you don’t want them struggling with a mouthful of questionable words. Try a name generator if you’re having trouble or look at synonyms for certain words. Build your brand around this theme, and watch success come your way.

Designing it takes time and patience.

It’s not going to be made in a day. To make a beautiful website, it’s going to take time and effort to reach exactly what you’re going for. There’s plenty of websites that can help you build your site for free, like WordPress, Weebly, and Wix (which I’m using to create mine.) There’s endless themes and they’re totally customizable to your taste. Find the perfect color palette and you’re set! Start working, girl.

Writing that first blog post is a bit tricky.

What will you write for your first post? I suggest an about me introduction about all your interests. You could also do a simple Q & A post to get your viewers to learn a little bit more. Take some time to think about what you want to post, as your viewers will appreciate the time and effort you put into it. Also, interact with people! Get them involved and reciprocate any comments or feedback they may have. Don’t forget to promote your page! Friends and family are probably the best way to start, along with using SEO and keywords.

Once you get started, continue posting and stay on top of things! Brainstorm, brainstorm, brainstorm, but always remember to stay true to yourself.
