Stress typing to get this in by 12 am: It’s currently 11:50 pm, I am drowning in work, sipping honey lemon tea from the dhaba whilst listening to a playlist that I made during the mid sem week. The playlist is called “My last brain cell losing it while I binge eat noodles at 3 am”, and honestly who would get that better than fellow Ashokans. We all really know what it’s like during exam week, when our stomachs are growling at night and we’re trying to get an assignment done by 11:59 pm. I remember the night I made this playlist. I was on the verge of tears because I couldn’t get my sociology assignment in by time so to cover it up I was stress eating junk food trying to find a place in the library cafe to study (where I wouldn’t get eaten alive by mosquitos). Needless to say, music really got me through. The first half of the playlist consists of “quirky” indie songs, which I am hoping most of you haven’t heard of because I love giving new music recommendations. I typically listen to these when I am reading through and pretending that I understand everything. Some of these include Upstairs by Love point, Dancing by Mellow fellow, Vanilla Baby by Billie Martin, Flirting in Space by Brad Stank, Little Legs by Summer Salt amongst others. The other half of the playlist are pop songs like Max’s Love me less, Blackbear’s 1 sided love, Charlie Puth’s We Don’t talk anymore, and basically all of Joji’s songs. I listen to these when I am feeling hyperproductive and type unhealthily fast.

“There’s party on my mind”: To non-ashokan readers, let me tell you that we also have days where we are not pulling out our hair due to academic stress or running around organizing events. On those days (which are typically Thursdays evenings) we take out our best outfits and rush to the nearby theka to get the cheapest alcohol. This playlist was made for one of those very Thursday nights, when I hosted a party in the room (which god forbid I’ll do again due to the aftermath of it). It’s called “Desi saste daaru on a Thursday night”, is a perfect mix of Bollywood bangers and item songs that we talk about being extremely non feminist but end up dancing to anyway. Some songs that make me feel like the main character in the party include

Party on my mind, Laila main Laila, Lovely, Crazy Kiya re, Radha and Dhoom Machale amongst others.

Why does RH3 feel like an alien world? Everytime I walk into RH3, I see at least three random pairs of socks and shoes lying around. I also hear extremely cis het male music, which is mostly rap just blasting around in corridors. I am not going to lie when I say this, but rap music is a guilty pleasure, be it going to the gym, walking around ashoka or even studying sometimes. This playlist is called “The smell of testosterone in the gym” and mostly consists of rap but also of hard/alternative rock. Some of my rap favorites are Praise the Lord by Asap Rocky, Need it by Migos, Over by Playboi Carti, Ice Cream Man by Tyga, Jesus Walks Kanye West and a whole lot of Travis Scott. Songs in the second half of the playlist include Woodkid’s Run Boy Run, Wolfmother’s Joker and the thief, Polyphia’s 40oz, a bunch of Jimi Hendrix and AC/DC, some scream rock by GRLwood amongst others.

“Bhaiya please jaldi kardo”: Okay so I am going to let you guys in on a little secret. I get ignored every time at THC because I am too short to reach the counter. So everytime bhaiya gives my order, I feel like a boss lady who has accomplished something out of the ordinary. This playlist therefore is called “Munching on piri piri fries feeling like a cool gal”. When I rule the World by Liz starts off the playlist in a perfect way, other songs include Vigalante Shit by Taylor Swift, Bitter by Fletcher, Rich Girl Mood by Kehlani, Make me your Queen by Declan McKenna, Goddess Jaira Burns and a whole bunch of Lana Del Ray like Fucked my way to the top. While the title does not correlate with this at all, I also listen to this playlist when I am getting ready (and trust me I feel like a queen).
Ham to Udd gaye, Udd gaye”: No no this is not another playlist, its just me ending this article just like end all events – with the ever so iconic Ashokan anthem Udd Gaye by Ritviz.

Meher Singh

Ashoka '24

Hi ! I am Meher, a sophomore at Ashoka University. My personality trait is obsessing over Shrek and talking about alt-rock and rap music. I name my plants after beverages, so I am quirky that way. I also have an absolutely crazy sweet tooth, so if you want to find me anywhere I will probably be sitting at Nirula's, eating their hot chocolate fudge<3
