26 Things You Need to Stop Feeling Guilty About

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Arkansas chapter.

You’re stressed, and I know it. Stress is not usually fleeting, and everyone copes with stress in a different way; but the important thing to remember is the number of things that you can just stop worrying about. We are young, and we don’t have the energy to be wasted on the trivial things that you should just stop feeling guilty over.

1. Messy apartments. If your schedule looks anything like mine, it’s totally okay that your kitchen is a bigger disaster than you feel like your life is. The truth is – it probably is, and that’s totally okay. Leave it alone, clean it later.

2. Piles of laundry. When you’ve picked through almost every item of your wardrobe, then you can do laundry. Save it for a snowy day.

3. Forgetting assignments. We all do it, and it is not the end of the world. Take a deep breath.

4. Losing things. Your car keys, your binder, your backpack – it can’t be gone forever, just retrace your steps and remember that you have bigger fish to fry.

5. Slacking off. Everyone needs a break, and everyone has a breaking point. So, you dropped the ball once – big deal. Let it roll off your shoulder.

6. Not going mainstream. Being unique is beautiful.

7. Being mainstream. There is not a single ounce of shame in liking what everyone else likes.

8. Staying up late. We got rid of bedtimes when we were in high school. So, dont be ashamed to stay up until 2:00 in the morning and sleep until noon. You do you.

9. Staying home. If you don’t want to go out, don’t go out. Curl up with a good book and enjoy the great indoors.

10. Blowing your cash. If you have it, sometimes, you just need to spend it. Go for it.

11. Not staying in touch with old friends. If they slipped away and were okay with it, maybe they were never worth keeping.

12. Holding on to old memories. The good times will always be good. Cherish them.

13. Blowing your resolutions. Who needs New Years to try again?

14. Not meeting standards. Make your own standards, and live up to those. Never let anyone or anything else define you.

15. Not feeling okay. Take a blanket, a box of tissues and watch Titanic. Everything will be okay.

16. Calling in when you should not have called in. If someone tells you that they have never played chicken before, they are lying.

17. Skipping class. It. Happens.

18. Overdoing it. That just means you went all out, and you should never be ashamed of that.

19. Underdoing it. You fell just beneath whatever mark you thought you were supposed to hit – but it’s a valuable mistake to learn from.

20. Failing. Without failures, we would never know how to aim for our successes.

21. Losing someone. Did you lose them, or did they lose you?

22. Not having a religion. Live life as you please, and never let anyone tell you that you’re wrong.

23. Having a religion. Keep your faith strong and never let anyone sway your opinion.

24. Forgetting to call your parents/grandparents. Apologize and move on, and remember that a phone works both ways.

25. Dishes in the sink. Eating cereal out of a measuring cup makes college life memorable.

26. Never making your bed. Seriously – no one ever does it.
