Gatsby?…What Gatsby?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Arizona chapter.

This week I want to talk to you about the one and only Jay Gatsby, there is truly no one greater. I went to see the movie last night and it was magical, I don’t think that there was a ever a movie that could keep me on the edge of my seat. It took a classic and added the modern twist that we have always wanted. It was like reading the book and having your imagination projected onto the big screen. I would just have to say that everything about it, the dialogue, the actors, the setting and setup was so rich. I wanted more but because I have read the book, I knew that this beautiful experience would be over within minutes so I tried to grasp the moment with everything possible but I was amazed that there was finally a movie that did justice to the book. Let me just say that this movie was beautifully casted, Leonardo DiCaprio brought Jay Gatsby alive on a whole other level and Tobey McGuire as Nick Carraway brought tears to my eyes with his genius. Oh my goodness and the music, this soundtrack may very much be the soundtrack to my life, but my favorite song would have to be Lana Del Rey’s Young and Beautiful just because Lana is perfect and everything about her voice shouts Roaring ‘20s. However, when I was watching this, I was just hoping that the movie was going to explain the themes and symbolism because those are the most important parts of the book, without that it would be a story about a man that grew up to be rich and was doing everything to get the girl that got away but no. This movie showed me the hope and the American dream that I remembered learning in one of my high school English classes. This movie was a wonderful start to my summer and I recommend you go see it too!
