Enriching the lives of kids through music: MyTown Music

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Arizona chapter.

Established in June 2010, MyTown Music, a growing music education program and recording label, is helping kids incorporate music into their lives. After only one year, MyTown Musichas thrived and continued to grow in Tucson, and will soon expand their company in Brooklyn, New York, and Scottsdale, Arizona.  With group sessions and private lessons, “MyTown Musicexists to inspire, enrich, & empower each student with a superior music education experience.” Last week on the U of A mall, a band held a live performance, while students in the organization handed out free pizza and burritos to help promote their internship opportunities.

Students at the U of A are very involved in this cause whether it’s through teaching lessons, volunteering, or promoting the company. MyTown Musicis looking for interns in a wide variety of areas such as marketing, research, networking, fundraising, media, social media, and grant writing. Olivia Tarabini, a communications senior, worked as the social media intern this past semester and learned a lot through the process. “I’ve actually learned a lot myself about music through their teaching the kids,” Olivia said. “I’ve met a lot of really great people and have learned a lot about the business world too. Things like how to brag about the company without being obnoxious and how to effectively convey things to people so that they see what you see.”

With such large budget cuts, it has been harder for schools to keep music programs and this organization is helping to keep the music in kid’s lives. “I think it’s a wonderful thing that they’re doing, bringing music back into the schools,” Olivia said. “Because even if the school system can’t pay for the programs, parents obviously see the need for their kids to be a part of it, otherwise they wouldn’t support it.  [Founder and co-owner] Corey Ferrugia and [co-owner] Eric Castillo are always talking about how music is complementary to everything- school, sports, and hobbies. It’s not one or the other.”

MyTown Musictruly is “Hope For Music Education.”
