This summer in Tucson there was a rise of a new kind of burglar. With more and more houses being built with attached garages, break-ins are happening less through the front door and more often through the garage door.

There are thousands of break-ins every year in Tucson and homeowners are protecting themselves with more advanced locks and alarm systems. But one door that isn’t getting as much attention is the garage door.

Garage doors are left unlocked and unprotected more often than front doors or windows making it easy for burglars to break-in, steal valuable items such as power tools and bike parts, and get away without ever being caught.

Since the thefts are happening in the garage, an area that receives little observation, the crime isn’t always noticed right away. Here are some tips on keeping your home safe from intruders:

Always make sure the garage door is locked and the garage itself is always closed.

Put deadbolt locks on any doors leading to the house from the garage.

Invest in alarm systems and keep an eye out for suspicious activity.
