Why It’s Important to Take Care of Yourself

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

I’m the type of person who lives for color coded planners and fully booked schedules. Having down time seems like I am wasting my time, and I need to find something else to do to be productive. I love to stay on the go, and as long as I have coffee, that on the go can be for a really long time.

I am that person that never stops, and I know a lot of you are too. I spend my days so surrounded by other people, whether it be in class, the endless meetings every night of the week, or helping someone I see in need. I know some of you can relate to this, and what I am here to tell you is: slow down.

It is very easy to get caught up in the daily routine and completely forget about taking care of yourself. Staying on the go and stressed all the time weakens your immune system, which makes you more susceptible to getting sick. Trust me, this happens. You don’t want to spend a few days laying in bed (or your bathroom floor), too sick to do anything at all.

It is okay to treat yourself to a bath bomb or an ice cream cone once in a while. Never feel like you are wasting time when it comes to winding down and relaxing, because the most important thing is making sure you are well cared for and happy. Watch that extra episode of Gilmore Girls or Grey’s Anatomy in between studying and meetings.

Being on the go and involved in extra curricular activities outside of school is awesome. It is the best way to meet new friends and build your resume for future employers, but you have to make sure you leave at least a little bit of time for yourself each day.

A few great ways I have found to destress are going on the Blue Ridge Parkway, playing with dogs at the Humane Society, and taking a relaxing bath with a Lush bath bomb with my laptop propped up playing Gilmore Girls. Find what works for you and stick to it every day. You will be much happier and healthier in the long run.
