Where Are They Now? Washed Up Celebrities

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Sean Kingston

I’ve been wondering about Sean Kinston’s livelihood for about five years now. Sean is actually the one that gave me the idea for this article (thanks, Sean). Jumping back to November 2015, Kingston claimed he was kidnapped by some jewlers for not accepting a traded watch. The jeweler took Kingston’s watch and refused to give him the less expensive watch he had promised him. Kingston then became very upset and demanded that he get the new watch, at which point, the jeweler’s representatives locked him in the car before driving him to a remote location and dropping him off. This technically constitutes a case of kidnapping. Uhm…okay.

Back in September of this year, Sean decided he was still significant enough to post, and then delete, a video putting himself in the middle of the Meek Mill & The Game beef. Nowadays, it appears all Sean is up to is posting weird tweets about trust and knowledge. Enlightening. In January of this year, Kingston VERY low-key dropped the single “One Away.” You’re not missing out, I promise.

Dylan & Cole Sprouse (aka Zach & Cody)

After living the suite life, Dylan & Cole graduated college in May of last year. Dylan Sprouse was managing a restaurant in New York until recently, and provided color commentary for a few Super Smash Bros tournaments, but has recently returned to acting. He is set to appear in the thriller “Dismissed” this year and recently joined the cast of the video game “Reborn.” Cole Sprouse, on the other hand, has been keeping a low profile. A few tweets here and there, a moderately active Instagram page, and that’s about it. He has been sending tapes out to a few projects that he’s interested in, and has spent some time with a pen in his hand, branching out into writing, but no concrete projects on the horizon. They both decided to take a break from acting this year, and while it seems that Dylan has reneged on that idea, Cole has not.

Daniel Powter

Remember that song “Bad Day?” Yeah that song we all listened to it when our significant other didn’t text us back in sixth grade. After “Bad Day,” Daniel released two follow-up singles which were nothing but tragic. Having a few too many bad days, Powter became addicted to alcohol and cocaine. Luckily, Daniel sobered up and since has been in the studio in Los Angeles working on brand new music. While he’s teased a number of new songs, we’re still awaiting a true comeback.

Amanda Bynes

After suffering breakdowns equally as tragic as Brittany Spear’s in 2007, Bynes has bounced back. Though it was sad to hear of Bynes on a 5150 psychiatric hold, actually being forced to get help marked the turning point back to stability. As of April of this year, the thirty-year-old is keeping her shit together (wow). Amanda has been enrolled in the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising since spring 2014, is working on her designs, and hopes to launch a clothing line soon. We miss you, Amanda. Come back to us!

James Van Der Beek

Of course, he will always be Dawson, but James has done a lot more since Dawson’s Creek. He had a brief appearance on One Tree Hill, guest starred on Ugly Betty, Franklin & Bash and two different spinoffs of the Law & Order franchise. From 2012-13 he played a fictionalized version of himself in Don’t Trust the B**** in Apartment 23. He also created Vandermemes with Funny or Die.

Earlier this year, VDB began starring in CSI: Cyber. Just keeping the dream alive…

Paris Hilton

Remember that one time Kim Kardashian was Paris Hilton’s bitch? Hilton, who’s now 35, spends 300 days of the year managing a global brand, which includes 50 eponymous boutiques — granted you’d have to go to the United Arab Emirates to shop in one of Hilton’s stores. She put her first name on a luxury beach club in Paranaque City in the Philippines, and is working on a second. The latest addition to her empire is called Gold Rush, her 20th fragrance since 2004. Paris has reportedly sold $1.5 billion in her perfumes alone.

Drake Bell

After a wrist surgery in 2015, Bell is unable to play guitar as well as he used to. But since, he has recovered and played at a few benefits and played in a few movies not even worth mentioning because no one has ever heard of them. As of September of this year, Bell pleaded guilty to his second DUI conviction after swerving and driving 55 in a 35 MPH zone. Luckily Drake got 96 hours in L.A. County jail and will have to serve a 4-year probation. Nice.

Freddie Prinze Jr.

Freddie (aka Freddy) is now the father to two children, with his wife Sarah Michelle Gellar (aka Daphne). Acting wise, he has guest starred on Psych and Bones. He also had a short-lived sitcom Freddie, which totally sucked by the way. Now a days, Prinze Jr. does a solid amount of voice work (Star Wars Rebels, and video games such as Mass Effect and Dragon Age).

Nicole Polizzi (aka Snooki)

Luckily, Snooki has grown from her drunken disorderly beach days on the Jersey Shore.  Not too long after Jersey Shore, Snooki & JWoww ran from 2012 to 2015. She also competed on the 17th season of Dancing with the Stars in late 2013 and is set to appear on The New Celebrity Apprentice in early 2017 (is that still going to be a thing?). Polizzi currently stars on FYI’s Nicole & Jionni’s Shore Flip and has released five books over the years. Snooki and longtime love Jionni LaValle now have two children, Lorenzo and Giovanna. Since the shore, Nicole’s lost nearly 50 pounds and clearly got all of that fat injected into her lips.

Lil Jon

Just because Lil Jon can’t sell an entire album of crunk anymore doesn’t mean crunk is dead. It just means that Lil Jon’s role in the rap scene has changed. Where he once was able to pull in big names to feature on his tracks, he is now the big name brought in to give a song that special something. Which is exactly what happened in 2011, when he released “Drink” with LMFAO. And then again in 2014 with DJ Snake and “Turn Down for What.” Lil Jon seems to have found a place to roost. Now all that’s left is to see how his unique place in rap will hold up as he moves further into EDM.
