College is the perfect time to have a little fun and explore the world of dating without any serious strings attached, so why can’t there be a nitty-gritty list of the greatest places to be lovey-dovey (and even a little cheesy) in our beloved college town? With so much nature and countless locally-owned restaurants and attractions, picking the best choice for you and your beau can be a challenge. Using this list as your guide, I’ve narrowed down the most popular and romantic places in the High Country. Take note, ladies!

1. Howard’s Knob

This student-frequented lookout spot has been named “the best way to see all of Appalachian State” and is relatively easy to get via car or by foot.  Take a short drive from campus with a handful of your closest friends or significant other.  You’ll wind up the mountain and arrive at a grassy area with a rocky stairwell leading you to the famed lookout. The vista offers an eye-catching view of all of App’s campus, even leading you as far as Watauga High School’s fields. The relaxed vibe and easy access of Howard’s knob entices students and locals alike, and the readily available open area gives hikers a chance to enjoy a small picnic lunch or even watch the sunset on a cool mountain evening.

2. Rough Ridge

While this parkway hotspot isn’t for the inexperienced hiker, the views and Instagram opportunities are to die for.  All of your friends from other schools will instantly be jealous of your mountain-y dates. The Blue Ridge Parkway itself is nationally famous for being one of the most beautiful drives in the country, and it earns extra date-worthy points for the plethora of choices in trails, lakes, and lookouts. One of the most popular places, Rough Ridge, is a combination of a moderate hike and an unbelievable overlook of all of the parkway. Take a signature “pride rock” picture with your man as you take in the breathtaking landscape of our mountainous backyard.

3. Dinner and Live Music at Black Cat Burrito

A popular local spot close to campus, this cozy little eatery offers a wide variety of burritos, nachos, and salads with a southwestern and locally grown flair. Not only is it a great place for a quick bite and a good brew (if you’re of age), Black Cat hosts local bands on select Friday and Saturday nights. This creates the perfect ambiance for an intimate date night.

4. The Gamekeeper

Known for its out of the ordinary cuisine and hefty price tag, the Gamekeeper is an experience worth the splurge if your special someone is a foodie like you! The log cabin-esque décor and friendly owners allows your date night to sparkle like the Boone stars. Cozy up with your boy next to one of the stone fireplaces and indulge in a gourmet dinner for two right here in Boonetown.

5. Sunday Jazz Brunch at Canyons

Since 1993, Canyons Restaurant in Blowing Rock has offered a delicious brunch menu accompanied by live music each Sunday.  Enjoy the talents of jazz musicians Todd Wright and Friends as you brunch on a cool Sunday morning.  Along with the tasty food and soothing music, the view of the Blue Ridge Mountains at sunrise is one of the most romantic views in the country.

With all of these spectacular choices, it is time to mix up your dating routine!  Each place offers a unique environment for an ideal date.
