Things App State Students Miss About Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

The room we’ve had for years. Furry animals licking your face or jumping up on you. Old friends. Old memories.

Sound familiar, collegiettes? Is it a little nostalgic? It’s okay. Homesickness is real. We’ve been there, done that. Here are just a few of those things that we miss from home.

Home-cooked meals

From Ramen to mac ‘n cheese, ask any student and they will tell you that at one point, they too were guilty of eating some kind of cheap, nutrient-deficient meal for days, weeks, even months on end. It’s no surprise that when we miss home, we think of our mother or father’s cooking. Not only that, but we think of opening the fridge and seeing lots of options–lots more than we have now, even if we have a fridge in our little home away from home. Not to mention, all the food back home is free (unless we bought it ourselves.)  There’s no declining meal plan because we don’t have to deal with the money. So yes, free is good, too.

Warmth

Boone is certainly infamous for its nastily cold winters. We all have experienced walking to class in freezing temperatures and subzero wind chill, piling on layers upon layers and still not warm. Eek. Although it makes for a good story and even better sledding, it’s nice to be able to go home to a comfortably warm house, instead of having no control over or arguing over the temperature in the room.

Stable Internet Connection

App students are no strangers to the spotty internet connection on campus. Several times throughout the year, we get that infamous email in our inbox from the IT department about connection issues and how it will be solved within the next day or so. That automatic connection where we don’t have to input our username and password or use an Ethernet cable. Or that automatic connection where the only time it falters is in the case of a storm or power outage.

Our Own Space

One of the great things about having our own space is the ability to make it our “home away from home,” even if it’s just one side of a room. But that’s just it, it’s not home. Going home to our own rooms, may be like going home to an old friend. We may have had the room for years, and it’s nice to go home to see our space. Our posters of celebrity crushes. Our Nicholas Sparks books. Our Harry Potter books. Our pets sleeping at the bottom of our beds. We miss it all.

Family

Remember that one season of Modern Family when Haley Dunphy had graduated high school and planned to attend a university several hours away? Remember when she actually ended up going to a community college? Even she, who couldn’t wait to move out, missed what she grew up with. She missed fighting with her sister and teasing her brother. She missed her overprotective mother and “cool” dad. We don’t realize that sometimes we might take our loved ones for granted, even when they tell us like it is or get mad at us. We think they are always going to be there for us, and they’re not. They can’t be. They just can’t. *tears*

Fear not, collegiettes! Winter break is only a few days away!
