Talk About Girl Power: Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton Campaign in North Carolina

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

While Chelsea Clinton was up at Boone talking to App State students, democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and first lady Michelle Obama held their first joint rally Thursday, October 27, just down the road in Winston-Salem.

Clinton and Michelle Obama were both campaigning for Hillary, but they were also campaigning for fellow Democrats in North Carolina, governor candidate Roy Cooper, and Senate candidate Deborah Ross.

“He will repeal HB2,” Clinton said of Cooper, drawing applause from the crowd. “I believe everything we care about is at stake in this election.” Other important topics that were brought up were immigration reform, climate change, gay marriage, affordable college education and gender issues such as equal pay for women.

Clinton then introduced FLOTUS Michelle Obama to the audience, giving us major friendship goals.

Michelle referred to Clinton as “my girl” throughout most of her speech. She was a cheerleader for Clinton, saying that she “is absolutely ready to be commander in chief on day one and yes, she happens to be a woman.” And if you’re wondering if Michelle and Clinton are actually friends: “And if people wonder, yes, Hillary Clinton is my friend, she has been a friend to me and Barack and Malia and Sasha, and Bill and Chelsea have been supportive from the very day my husband took the oath of office.”

Michelle went on to campaign for her friend, saying: “Hillary is someone who we can trust with the nuclear codes because we want to go to sleep at night knowing our kids and country are safe.”

Trump as been on recorded saying the election is “rigged.” Michelle Obama talked about this by also trying to emphasize the importance of voting, saying: “They are trying to get you to stay home.” She went on to say, “Voters decide who wins and who loses. Period. End of story.”

This wasn’t one-sided, as Clinton praised Michelle’s efforts as FLOTUS: “Seriously, is there anyone more inspiring than Michelle Obama?” Clinton asked. “Maybe it’s especially meaningful to me because I do know something about being first lady of the United States.”

“Let’s be real,” Clinton added. “As our first African-American first lady, she’s faced pressures I never did. And she’s handled them with pure grace. By any standards, she has been an outstanding first lady who has made us all so proud.”

Declaring Clinton the most qualified presidential candidate in history, Michelle told the crowd, “Yeah, that’s right. Hillary doesn’t play.” It’s fair to say FLOTUS doesn’t either.

Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama were all about girl power at their event, and we can say that these two are major friendship goals! Voting is going on now in North Carolina. Make sure you get out and vote!
