Surviving An App State Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Most of us here are from places that are a bit warmer and less snowy than App is. Here are the best ways to survive this new climate without missing a beat!

1. Non-Slip Boots

Everyone Loves Uggs and Bearpaws, but as warm as they are, they are furry and slippery. Wearing these will make your feet look great, but they will be soaked and cold to the bone. Also, your chances of falling are really high. Take it from someone who knows, falling is not fun.

We suggest non-slip, non furry boots to get you through the winter. They may feel heavy, but they are heavy duty and will keep you safe.

2. Buy a big coat

You need to buy the best coat you can find, but don’t just buy a coat because it is big. Buy a coat that is furry everywhere inside (not outside). The fur works as insulation to keep you warmer, without looking like a marshmallow.

3. Leave earlier

Try to give yourself extra time to get places. If you are rushing you are more likely to get hurt, and an App State winter is not the time to be in a rush.  Five or ten minutes could help you make sure that you stay a lot safer.

4. Take Short (or long) Cuts

Try going through buildings. It may be a longer walk, but going through buildings is a lot warmer and less risky than trying to trudge through the snow in freezing temperatures. The Student Union is a really great alternate route to the buildings on East Side.

5. Drive Safely

We all have to go home and come back right in the thick of winter for Thanksgiving and Winter Break, so we need to make sure that we do it without risking everyone’s safety. Drive slowly, stick to the main roads, and use snow tires or even snow chains (if you don’t know what those are, ask your parents or favorite teacher here, most of them will know).

Good luck braving the winter!
