The Struggles of Registering for Classes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

It’s that time of the year again, and a mixture of feelings arise for many. I’m talking about registering for classes and the struggles that come along with it! For seniors, this will be bittersweet knowing that you only have one semester of college left to go, and for freshmen, it’ll be exciting knowing you’ve made it to the halfway mark of your first year. Then there are sophomores that are getting more involved in the classes for their majors, and juniors like myself who are ready to get spring semester over with so we can officially call ourselves seniors! Whatever year you are in college, you have to deal with the dreaded week of class registration.

First we must all get ready for what feels like a battle. I’m one of those college students that has to plan every aspect of their life to convince myself that I have it all together. So I lose track of the countless times I check Appalnet to see when classes are scheduled or how often I look up professors’ ratings. This is a huge step that I think a lot of people overlook! Obviously the really dumb ratings for professors can be ignored, but if someone takes the time to write out a little paragraph about a professor, you can pretty much bet they mean every word of it. If I’ve checked over everything and have the perfect schedule written down, I usually realize that I mistakenly forgot to write the CRN’s for everything down. Even though I tell myself every semester that I won’t forget to do this, it always seems to happen.

So once I finally have everything written down and my registration date gets closer, I have to deal with the waiting process which is probably my least favorite part. The over thinker that I am always wonders if the classes I really need will fill up fast. I don’t get so worried about gen-ed classes, but classes in my major aren’t always offered and the spots are limited.

I’m not even kidding when I say I have an alarm set for the day and time I need to be by my laptop to sign up for classes. I pray that my internet speed is faster than everyone else’s and that there’s just one little spot for me in all of the classes that I need. My typing speed is abnormally faster than any other day I’d be using a computer and the pressure is on. When all my choices are submitted it’s just a waiting game to see if I got in! Even if there happens to be a class that you don’t get in to, don’t fret. Waitlisting isn’t the end of the world, and there are plenty of students that decide to drop a class for one at a different time. It just gives you an excuse to take a fun elective you didn’t think you would have time for, or you can knock out some of that lovely (yet never ending) gen-ed. Either way, I encourage anyone to try and make the best out of their situation. You’ll get those classes you want eventually and there’s no need to be disheartened.

So cheers to everyone dealing with registration once again, whether it be your first or last time facing the online crowds. My wish is for all colliegettes to get whatever classes their little hearts desire! Don’t let this process stress you out. I know it seems like an uphill battle, but with some patience and determination we can all get through it!
