She’s More Than Just an Athlete: Meet Katie Williford

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Ever since she was little, Katie Williford has had a love and passion for the game of softball. Ultimately, all her hard work and dedication was rewarded when she received a scholarship to Appalachian State University to continue her love for the game.

Being a pitcher, her body was constantly pushed to crucial limits and left her questioning if she could endure the pressure that all the early morning practices, weightlifting, and countless games entailed.

Towards the end of her sophomore year, Katie received the shock of her life. She was told by doctors that she might have to give up the one thing she has known her whole life – softball.

Katie needed back surgery in order to live a wholesome life. After she finally agreed to the surgery, she underwent an extreme life-threatening misfortune. Playing softball again was not the only concern, but the idea of walking and living a normal life was now the main worry.

This major setback not only allowed Katie to see what is truly vital to her life, but it allowed her to see the true friendships that had developed from being a part of the Appalachian State women’s softball team, along with her family and friends. The players on the App State softball team vastly call themselves sisters. It was in this moment, after Katie’s surgery, everyone could really see the truth this principle held. As Katie continued to overcome every milestone despite the doctor’s evaluation, a year later, after her life-threatening surgery, Katie overcame all odds and finally took back her position on the mound on her 21st birthday.

While there were many tears shed, the ability to show how resilient she had become truly impressed every spectator and supporter.

As her comeback of a lifetime was unfolding, Katie’s true love and admirations began to flourish. After knowing that she is an avid doggy mom of two, and a special education major, you begin to understand the core values Katie holds to heart.

Being a special education major, Katie is constantly surrounded by students that inspire her daily. When asked what Katie’s favorite aspect of being a special education major was, her response was simple, “The students. I love being surrounded by students with so many amazing abilities! Every student always shows up with a smile that can make everyone’s day.”

Katie has worked with the Special Olympics Organization since she was high school, which enabled her ambition to follow a career path that embodies the same values as the Special Olympics Organization. Her love for her students never goes unnoticed. She has excelled greatly in her major, along with creating many admirable relationships with her students.

Though you may not see Katie roaming the campus during this spring semester, due to her active softball schedule, you can find her on the mound at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium, or in the halls of the Reich College of Education building where she is constantly filling the field/halls with her infectious smile.
