Pink’s VMAs Speech To Her Daughter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Pink received the Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs this year, however, she should also be in the running to win the “mom of the year” award for her speech to her six-year-old daughter, Willow. Typically, award recipients have a list of people to thank and a few motivational words along the lines of how and why they were successful.

Pink chose to dedicate this time to speak to her daughter. During the speech to her daughter, who was in the audience, she told the story about how she, out of the blue, said to Pink in the car “Mama, I’m the ugliest girl I know. I look like a boy with long hair”. Pink responded with “Who said this?” and “Can I kick a six-year-old’s ass?” (lol)

In result, Pink went home to make a PowerPoint presentation that consisted of androgynous rock stars and artists who Pink said lives their truth and are more than likely made fun of, yet they continue on. Pink then asked her daughter “what do you think I look like?”, because she has been referred to as being “too masculine” or “her body is too strong,” and her daughter answered that she was beautiful.

She then asked Willow “Do you see me growing my hair?, Do you see me changing my body?, Do you see me changing the way I present myself to the world?” All of her daughter’s answers were “No, mama.”

Pink’s last question was “Do you see me selling out arenas all over the world?” her little girl responded “Yes, mama.”

All while her precious little girl is standing up in the audience grinning from ear to ear.

Pink continues with “So, baby girl we don’t change, we take the gravel in the shell and we make a pearl, and we help other people to change so that they can see more kinds of beauty…” Pink closes with “And you my darling girl are beautiful and I love you.”

Like wow, my heart is melting.

I do not think there could have been a better platform for Pink to address this. Not only was her daughter directly in the audience, but people- specifically young girls and women- were viewing this from all over the world. I think no matter who you are it’s always nice to have a good reminder that you are beautiful and to embrace that beauty.

Pink definitely represents the definition of “mom goals” for giving this speech.
