With Halloween almost here, it is only logical that you would want to visit haunted trails and houses filled with people in full costume and makeup trying to get a scare out of you. However, nothing compares to visiting a site that is actually haunted.
Whether you believe in spirits or not, these places have been rumored to house them. So if you are looking for something to do this Halloween season and you are burnt out of costumes and makeup, go check out one of these places.
1. Grove Park Inn- Asheville, NC
Some time in 1920, a woman in a white dress jumped to her death in the hotel’s atrium. She now resides in a guest room on the fifth floor of the hotel. It is rumored that she killed herself due to a broken heart, but it is unknown as to why her spirit still stays at the Grove Park Inn.
2. The Great Dismal Swamp, Northern Border of NC
This swamp takes up hundreds of thousands of acres of North Carolina’s northern border. This was a place where slaves who escaped from their masters would flee to. The swamp’s waterways and forests full of cypress trees are home to some pretty creepy hauntings. Visitors have reported seeing ghosts and weird lights, but also hearing sounds they could not explain.Â
3. Lincoln Academy, King’s Mountain, NC
Lincoln Academy used to be an all girls school, but today, all that is left is the old foundation. In April of 1974, a girl named Kathleen Smiley was found dead and tied to a tree near the school grounds. Rumors of how she died include that she was raped and disemboweled by two men. Some people think the two men were framed for her murder by a cult of satanists who used her body for a ritual. It is said that demonic spirits stay on the property. Reports of paranormal activity on the grounds include sounds of crying children, shadowy figures, large changes in temperature in different areas, mists and smoke, unexplained footsteps, and random voices. Some people have even reported being touched and pushed by forces they could not see.Â
4. Green Park Inn, Blowing Rock, NC
It has been said that a room on the third floor of this beautiful hotel is haunted by a woman who died there many years ago. There have been reports of people who have seen her in a ghost form walking on the third floor and feeling shivers every once in a while.Â
5. East Residence Hall-Appalachian State University, Boone, NC
East Hall is one of the most talked about haunted places in Boone. Students who have lived there say that they have felt unseen objects brush against them, seen lights turn on and off without anyone touching the switch, and heard strange footsteps and whispers. It has also been rumored that students have seen an actual ghost of a girl in white. Some students will come back from class after having no one in the room all day, and stuff will be rearranged. Back in the 1960s, Appalachian State was still a teaching college. A teaching student tragically took her own life on the basement floor and ever since then, the halls of East Residence Hall have been haunted.
