Mother’s Day is nearly here.  Though it seems to sneak up on us year after year, the holiday serves as a much needed reminder to love and honor the woman that carried you a lot longer than nine months.

Let’s face it, with the added stress from finals and graduation were all a little short for time to go shopping.  Have no fear, collegiettes!  Whether it be a short drive to Blowing Rock or a short walk to King Street, the High Country is packed with local shops and vendors with the perfect gift. By spending your dollars locally, you are both reinvesting in your own community and giving mom something special.

Here are just a few gift ideas for buying your Mother’s Day gift locally!

1. Local Pottery

Just by strolling down King Street, you pass a bunch of cool galleries.  Whether you stop at Doe Ridge pottery, Hands Craft Co-Operative or Mast General Store, you’re sure to find something perfect for her.  Between hand thrown vases, coffee mugs, flower pots, brie melters, tiny bowls for jewelry, candle holders, and the possibilities are nearly endless!

2. Art of Oil

If you haven’t been in here yet, you really should stop by.  Their location on King Street has over 40 flavors of gourmet olive oil and balsalmic vinegars.  If your mom loves to cook don’t miss this little shop!

3. Bath Products

There are also tons of places close by that sell specialty lotions, balms and soaps, some of which are made locally! Stop in stores like Art Walk and Mast General Store to see what they have to offer.

4. Local Jewelry

Peruse shops like Art Walk and Farmers Hardware to see what kind of unique pieces they have on display.

5. Loose Tea and Spices

If your mom enjoys a nice cuppa’, be sure to visit the Spice and Tea Exchange of Blowing Rock.  They have tons of artisan seasoning blends made in house, and have a wide variety of loose teas.

6. Local Candles

Everyone likes candles, and they’re widely available in this area.  If you’re willing to visit Blowing Rock, there is even a store devoted to handmade candles called High Country Candles.

7. Vintage Candy Assortment

We all end up splurging in the Candy Barrel in Mast General Store.  Make this trip a little more productive by creating a basket of your mom’s favorite treats, or pick out vintage varieties  from her childhood to give her a blast from the past.

8. Mountaineer Gear

Every proud mama needs a little Appalachian gear, and this town has you covered.  Opt for a cozy sweatshirt, a cute tee, or even an “App Mom” car magnent if she doesn’t have one already!

9. Fresh Flowers from the Farmers Market

Because Mother’s Day falls on a Sunday, picking up a bouquet from the market at Horn in the West on Saturday is perfect timing! The flowers are beautiful and fresh, and you can usually give the vendors a price point and they’ll  put together a custom arrangement based on which colors and varieties you mom likes.

10. Sweet Treats from Stick Boy

Every mom deserves something sweet on their special holiday, right? Swing by local Stick Boy Bread Co. to see what they have in store.  Between beautiful bundts, rich cheesecakes, and decadent cookie creations I promise you won’t leave there empty handed!
