I Made the Switch to Custom Hair Care – Here’s How it Went

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Let’s talk about hair. Since I was a kid, I have had a love/hate relationship with my hair. It’s thick and always feels burnt and unhealthy; sure I use my fair share of curling wands and straighteners, but not too much. Our hair is unique to us, it comes in all shapes, sizes, lengths, and colors, and hair care is just as important as skincare in my opinion. Great hair can give you the confidence boost you need to slay the day.

I have used many big-name brand shampoos and conditioners and it all ended with the same results. No monumental change, no improvement, and my hair never ends up like the models in the ads. Now, don’t get me wrong, some name brands show results, it just takes a lot of trial and error, and a little bit of research to find the right fit. But I always thought, what am I doing wrong? What am I missing? I started looking into custom hair care brands like Function of Beauty and Prose. The questionnaire alone made me feel like it was the right switch; they ask you specific questions about your hair and even the type of environment you live in. Bet you didn’t know that where you live can affect your hair.

Just me? Okay.

When I received my personalized hair care box in the mail, I was so excited to try it out and see if it was worth the hype and money. Now, I’m one of those people who check my abs after 10 crunches or my eyelashes after one use of the extension gel. While I’m always disappointed when I see that my lashes are still microscopic and I don’t have abs of steel, my hair did feel better after one wash. I didn’t have to worry about losing more hair in the shower – more than I care to admit. When I finally used up the last drop of product, my hair felt so much better. I didn’t have to pray that my hair won’t fringe after using a hair straightener.

What makes these custom hair care brands so special is that, you’re not just picking a name brand product off the shelf and hoping for the best, you’re in a personal relationship with these companies. From the questionnaire to even the customization of the bottles, it’s all about you and your hair goals. I mean, who doesn’t want their name on a shampoo bottle?

So, next time your hair care products run out, give custom hair care brands a try. We all have different hair goals we want to achieve–so why stick to the same hair products your neighbor uses. Make it fun and personal to you, and because hair care is self-care, treat yourself.
