Hurricane Irma Comes To Boone

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

So by now everyone knows about Hurricane Irma. It has been one of the largest and most powerful hurricanes the United States has seen and today it made it’s way up to the tiny mountain town of Boone, North Carolina. This is what happened when us mountain people were hit by the one natural disaster we aren’t accustomed too.

When we first heard how bad the storm was going to be.

Then we finally got it together and went and bought all of the water, batteries, alcohol and potato chips that Walmart had to offer us.

Then the night before the storm arrived everyone plugged in their phones, laptops, portable batteries, heated blankets and basically anything else we may need to charge in anticipation for the power outages that were sure to happen. Then proceeded to Google ways to turn a potato into a phone charger…

We all made it through the night. Some a little different than others but we made it none the less…

The incredibly studious bunch of college kids that we are we all immediately checked our phones because class was obviously going to be canceled…. it wasn’t. Even though Boone floods when it drizzles outside.

“Okay maybe it’s not as bad as they thought it was going to be” What we thought we would look like today…

What we actually looked like….

By the time we got to our first class everyone was like…

When you realize that when Luke Combs is talking about Hurricanes and Jim Cantore talk about hurricanes they aren’t even close to the same… but that songs a bop and fits the day regardless.

When you got that email that said class was canceled because your prof was stuck in his/her house because there were trees down and your brain went from excited to shook in 2.5…You finally made it to the end of the day and somehow resemble a wet dog more than a person but at least you’re going home… after you wait on the bus.

You finally make it home and your bed and Netflix are calling your name and you realize you don’t have to go back into the rain until tomorrow.

Ok so this article was obviously just a joke of what happens when a hurricane hits a mountain town (which doesn’t happen often and we freaked out the way people do when it snows anywhere else in NC). But we’re all so blessed that no one was hurt and that we basically just got soaking wet and had some classes canceled…something that’s actually super normal for Boone. If you’d like to make a donation or learn how you can help those who were seriously effected by hurricane Harvey or Irma you can find out how to on the Red Cross website. Stay warm and dry Boonies and stay tuned for how HC App State is going to be raising money for those who were effected when we partner with The Rock on September 29th.
