Mixing prints in an outfit can be a hard trend to master because you never want to look crazy or like you’re trying too hard. However, pairing different patterns can open a new door of possibilities in your closet!

Some women can throw on three or four prints and still look chic, but here are some easy tips for us newbies!

Tip #1: Ease into this trend with accessories.

If you’re nervous about mixing prints, try a small dose of it. You can add in a second print in a small area like a scarf, purse, belt, or tights. Try wearing a polka dot blouse and animal print shoes, or a big floral print skirt with a small floral headband. It also doesn’t look as harsh when you keep them at opposite ends of the body to break it up. Here the black shirt spaces out my plaid scarf and my leopard print tunic.

Tip #2: Color Coordinate.

Another good rule of thumb is to keep prints in the same color family. Here I chose a gray skirt with gray blue striped shirt. The colors are similar and the rest of my outfit are neutrals to keep the focus on the prints.

Another idea would be to keep the whole outfit neutral (including the first print in a blouse or skirt) and then do a pop of color (and print) in the shoes, bag, or belt. A pop of color in an outfit always adds interest, so taking it one step further with a pattern makes it even more unique.

Tip #3: Size Matters.

One of the most important things to keep in mind is the size of the prints you are planning to mix. Generally speaking, you want to contrast a small one with a bigger one. If you mix two huge prints it can look overwhelming especially on a smaller frame, and two small ones can be ok but only if it looks intentional. You can also use size/colors to play up certain areas on your body. Here the dress has a small floral design and the cardigan has a larger abstract print.

The most important thing is to wear trends with confidence! If you look uncomfortable people will wonder if someone else dressed you. Walk with your shoulders back, stand up straight, and be intentional with your hair and makeup. Happy mixing!
