It’s that time of year again…football season! Here at Appalachian State there is no better way to spend a Saturday than at a football game.  As you all know, we hosted North Carolina A&T University on September 10 for our first home game. By the time football season has come around, students have pulled out their best black and yellow attire in preparation for the long awaited game day. Game days define Appalachian in the fall!

Appalachian really comes alive during game days. The sounds of the band practicing in the distance, people tailgating with friends, and students anxiously waiting for the game to start at Kidd Brewer Stadium can be heard all through Boone. Not only does Appalachian come alive, it also forms one big community of students, families, and alumni. While game days are exciting for all, there are a few tips every one should keep in mind these days!

Dress Accordingly
It is no surprise that Boone weather can be like a roller coaster. Be sure to check the hourly weather forecast for game days and dress accordingly! It is so easy to incorporate black and yellow in an outfit for any kind of weather.

Wear Sunscreen
Although this may not apply to every single game, it applies to the first few. Being in the sun all day can be very harsh on your skin. Without the humidity, in the mountains you may not realize just how much sun you are getting. Be sure to apply sunscreen before you leave the house and bring some along just in case.

Eat, Snack and Be Merry
Game days are so busy and exciting that it is easy to forget to eat.  Try to eat during tailgate time. Keep a snack in your bag in case you get that empty stomach feeling…or need to sober yourself up a bit!

Be Responsible and Safe
For college students, game days usually include drinking. Always be aware of what you are drinking, how much you have drank, and when you need to stop. Stay with a group of friends to make sure you will not end up alone in a big crowd. Keep an emergency contact in your phone in case a situation occurs and it is needed.

Have Fun
Enjoy the day! Sing along to the fight song, take pictures, and cheer on the Mountaineers! Game days seem to come and go abruptly so enjoy them while they last!

Keeping these tips in mind is an easy way to make those beloved game days even better! Go Appalachian!
