The Do’s and Don’ts of Summer School

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

For most of us, this past week has been about buckling down, pulling all nighters, and wildly anticipating our last final so we can face 3 months of freedom. But, for those of us who are enrolled in summer school, this past week is just another week of hard work until we get a 7-day break and have to start all over again. Fear not, you over-achievers or lag-behinders, summer school is not that much of a bummer. Follow these tips and you will be happy you endured a couple extra weeks of class over the summer holiday.

DO go to class every day. Summer school is only 5 weeks long, meaning that even one absence has the potential to wreck your grade for good. You can go to the dam and the waterfalls after class or on the weekends!

DO NOT oversleep.
Summer classes usually start early in the morning, so don’t oversleep. (See above tip for consequences of hitting snooze too many times.)

DO make new friends in your classes. For the most part, summer classes are small, meaning all the more opportunity to make some new pals to hang with on those days where there is really nothing to do.

DO NOT expect it to be easy. Contrary to popular belief, summer school is not always a walk in the park, especially if you’re in one of Dr. Hall’s classes.

DO expect to have homework.

DO NOT show up to class hung over. Have I mentioned that you will be in the same class for 2 full hours every day? If you are still feeling the effects from your previous night at the bar, those 120 minutes will drag. I promise you.

DO get on your professor’s good side. If you instantly make a bad impression in a small group of people, you are doomed for the next 5 weeks of class.

DO NOT let the fact that you have class everyday ruin your summer. You can still have fun in your free time!

DO make a good grade. After all, you are only in class for 20 days, which is really nothing in comparison to an entire semester. Make the most of it!

DO NOT fall behind. Summer classes are fast paced. If you fall behind you will have a hard time catching up when it comes time for exams.

DO learn something. Seriously, do not pay additional tuition money just to daydream all day. Use this time to learn something and get ahead in your course work!

DO HAVE A WONDERFUL SUMMER!
