The Bold Type: Freeform’s Newest Must-See

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

If you haven’t been watching Freeform’s new show, The Bold Type, stop what you are doing right now and start binging. This show is the epitome of women empowerment. Seriously, if you are in need of a good pick-me-up, then this show is the one for you. It is about three best friends living in New York and working for Scarlet magazine, which is this show’s equivalent of Cosmo. It is actually inspired by the former Editor in Chief, Joanna Coles. The three friends all started out as assistants working under influential people in the office, and now, 4 years later, they have all made a life for themselves at the magazine.

Jane Sloan (played by Katie Stevens) is a brand new writer for Scarlet magazine. Jane struggles to find her “sexy” voice for her articles. She tries a number of things, but what she is really passionate about is the political beat. Jane is very reserved and a little shy, but throughout the show, she starts to find her voice and stand up for what she believes in through the pieces she writes. I really identify with Jane because she is very logical. She analyzes every option and risk that goes into any situation and thrives on information and control. Jane does not like to be caught off guard. Jane is not very adventurous, but when she is told to go out of her comfort zone to write a great piece, she does it and doesn’t look back. She fights for what is right and doesn’t give up until she gets it.

Aisha Dee plays the character of Kat Edison, who is an outspoken woman warrior who serves as the Department Director of Social Media for Scarlet magazine. She is headstrong and does not take no for an answer. She is the empowered woman we all wish we could be. Kat knows what she wants and doesn’t stop until she gets it. She is a super feminist and does not stand for injustice. Her biggest campaign to date is in an episode on breast health awareness. She fought the Scarlet board of directors on posting “free the nipple” content in support of women’s rights. Kat is a strong character that this show could not survive without.

Sutton Brady is played by Meghann Fahy. Sutton struggles with loving her job, but also wanting and needing more. She loves her role at Scarlet and is the best assistant in the whole company, but she feels ready to move on, just like her other two friends did. She is given the option to take an advertising job, but her real passion is fashion. Although she doesn’t have any fashion experience, she goes for the fashion assistant job. She struggles with the difficult decisions she has to make, but it all works out in the end. You’ll have to watch to find out how! Sutton is also very headstrong and goes for what she wants, however, she is a little less confident in her moves than Kat. With the help of her friends, she gets through the hard times and makes a name for herself at Scarlet.

This show is the perfect representation of how strong women can overcome obstacles and stand up for themselves and for what is right. Through relationships and break ups, job trouble, getting sued by the subject of an article, a lesbian love affair, a free the nipple movement, group tinder dates, and much, much more, these friends are there for each other for everything. This show will make you want to move to New York City and work for a major magazine with your best friends. Start binge watching now, because new episdoes come on Freeform on Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. EST.

Overall, this show is meant to empower women and give them the chance to find their voice. It is a new and great take on feminism that any woman can be in support of. It is definitely a must see, and when you do watch it, you will quickly want to become a woman of the Bold Type.
