Being Patient Even When It Seems Impossible

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

There’s nothing like an existential crisis to really top off a pretty stressful semester, am I right?

“What am I going to do when I graduate? How am I going to pay my bills? Will I be single forever? Did I pick the right major?” The questions are absolutely never ending, and I’m only a junior – a junior who is entirely too type A for her own good.

I feel like when you’re in college you’re at this weird stage in your life where you can look back on things and see that they were meant to happen that way all along, but you still can’t trust in the timing of things. Everything in my life has worked out in the end. Maybe not perfectly, but there has been something either good or bad that has come out of every situation that life has put me in.

It may be cheesy to tie being patient in with being in love, but just stick with me. I met my now future husband when I was 12 years old. How did we meet? He busted my nose at soccer practice, which is one of the first times we spoke. We were in each other’s lives from that moment on. I went from “Do I like him?” to “James literally drives me insane!”  We’re getting married in November.

At the time it all seemed so ridiculous and scary, but when I look back at it, everything fell into place. It was all about timing. Timing is everything in every aspect of your life. Sports, cooking, driving, you name it. Life doesn’t always go according to your plan. It’s in someone’s plan, whether it be a higher power or just the Universe itself. Just be patient and breathe. Find solace in the fact that you are doing the best you can to prepare for YOUR future, not anyone else’s.

The future is something that terrifies and excites me at the same time. I’m very good at my major and I understand how to communicate with people, but turning that into a career? I couldn’t even tell you where to start, but instead of stressing myself to another breakdown (an article for another day), I’m trying to keep my mind on the things that will prepare me for the future instead of being afraid of it (which I still am of course).

The thing is, you could walk across that stage single, no job, no clue what you’re going to do with your life, but chances are, it’s going to work out for you even if you don’t see it yet. You always hear about the people who get the call for their dream job as soon as they leave graduation. You are going to struggle because everyone does, and if I’ve learned anything, it’s that not everything comes easy. It’s the things you have to wait for and be patient for that are usually the most worth it in the end.

I wish that as I wrote this I had being patient down to a science. I wish I had something more concrete to share with you to calm your nerves about how big the future seems after college. But let’s all just be honest with each other… the future is scary as s***.

What I can tell you is that I’ve learned that you have to trust in the plan, his plan, your plan, just trust in it.
