Becky with the Good Hair – The “Lemonade” Drama

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

If you’ve logged into social media lately, you’ve probably noticed a lot of lemon and bee emojis circulating around. This is because last weekend Beyoncé’s musical film on HBO made its big debut. Needless to say, shit hit the fan.

Bey’s new album, Lemonade, blew up social media with everyone talking about the cryptic lyrics on her new tracks. With lyrics like: “You know I give you life. If you try this shit again you’re gonna lose your wife” it seems pretty clear that most of Bey’s new lyrics are about cheating. Beyhive members, the name of Beyoncé’s fan base, went on the attack on social media, trying to figure out all the unanswered questions Lemonade left us with.

The biggest question fans want answered is who is Becky with the good hair? “He only want me when I’m not there. He better call Becky with the good hair.” First it was theorized it was Rachel Roy because of a cryptic Instagram caption she made about good hair. It took her some time to clear the air about the post, but she did deny the allegations that she is Becky. Rachel Roy sounds a lot like Rachel Ray, and some Beyhive members got confused, strayed from the hive, and started attacking Rachel Ray on Instagram. Homegirl was just trying to post a delicious sandwich recipe and her comment section was quickly filled with bee and lemon emojis. No hard feelings though, as Ray took the opportunity to post an amazing recipe for some lemonade.

It was then speculated that Becky was Rita Ora, but she quickly shut down those rumors too. So who is Becky? Well, Lori Loughlin took to twitter and allowed us to rule out one more person:

So who is this Becky person, and is Bey saying Jay Z had an affair with her? Wait, but seriously, has anyone seen Jay Z lately? Is he all right? Is he alive!?

The good news is, Beyoncé and Jay Z were recently spotted together a few days after Lemonade came out. They were seen riding in a golf cart together at Beyoncé’s Formation World Tour. So you all can rest easy. Jay Z is in fact still alive and not buried under Bey’s floorboard. However, even though Beyoncé dedicated her song “Halo” to Jay during the tour, the two were not wearing their wedding rings. We can shrug this off to the fact that both Jay and Bey have matching IV tattoos on their ring fingers that symbolize their wedding date and birthdays.

Beyhive members are still on the attack though, trying to find out what the deal is with the couple, and who this mysterious Becky person is. It’s been speculated that Beyoncé’s dad, Matthew Knowles, is whom Beyoncé’s lyrics are about. Her lyrics could refer to his divorce from her mother and the affair he had on her. Again, we can rule out this theory as Mr. Knowles quickly put to rest rumors that her lyrics were about him.

Orson Welles had us trying to figure out the mystery behind “Rosebud” in 1941, and now in 2016, Beyoncé has left us with the biggest mystery of our generation: Who is Becky with the good hair!? Like Jerry Thomas in Citizen Kane, we may never solve this mystery.

One thing’s for certain, Lemonade had every girl thinking her man was cheating on her.

Was it all for publicity? Did Jay Z cheat on Bey? Is America’s royal couple still together? Are Beyoncé’s lyrics about a certain person or, like “Rosebud”, is there a deeper meaning beyond them? And who is this Becky with good hair and what are her secrets to fighting humidity? These are the questions that’ll haunt our generation for years to come.

If you need us, we’ll be listening to Lemonade on repeat.
