App’s Acapella Groups You Should Know About

Pitch Perfect pushed collegiate acapella music in to the spotlight, in all its aca-bouncing glory. App State has been cultivating an impressive acapella scene for the past decade, and with Pitch Perfect’s popularity, the acapella groups at App have never been better. We have 9 groups of all sizes and styles on campus and on November 16th, they went head to head in the sixth annual Acapellageddon competition at Legends.

Here are a few short bios about each group:

EarCandy

EarCandy, one of App’s three all female acapella groups, was founded in 2007. They’ve become known for their sophisticated sound and classy image, usually found singing ballads in dresses and heels.

Higher Ground

Champions of the most recent acapella competition at App, Aca-Boo-La, Higher Ground is the oldest of the acapella groups on campus, founded in 2000. The all male group is more professionally minded than most, planning to release an EP sometime this fall.

Voicemale

Cleverly titled Voicemale is another of App’s all male groups. They’ve gained notoriety since their start in 2011 with their nostalgic Lion King medley. Fun fact: campus celebrity “Boombox Guy” is a member.

Lost in Sound

Lost in Sound morphed out of an earlier group on campus in 2009 and developed an enthusiastic sound, favoring up tempo and entertaining songs.

Enharmonix

The largest group on campus, Enharmonix is a coed group founded in 2011. Famous for their energetic performances, Enharmonix never fails to put on a good show.

Streets Ahead

Taking a page out of Pitch Perfect’s book, Streets Ahead arranged their own version of “The Cup Song.” The coed group, founded in 2012, is named based on their slogan “if you’re not streets ahead, you’re streets behind.”

Mountain Ayres

Another of App’s all female groups, the Mountain Ayres were founded in 2011. According to the group’s website, they are philanthropically minded and perform music which ranges decades and genres.

Treble Attraction

Founded in 2005, Treble Attraction was the first female acapella group on campus. They’ve grown in to a folksy sound, with several Mumford and Sons songs in their repertoire. However, their 90’s throwback Destiny’s Child medley is anything but folksy.

Northern Lights

Appalachian’s newest acapella group, formed this semester, is also App’s smallest group with only 7 members. Fun fact: they share a beatboxer with Enharmonix.
