This past week was historic for Appalachian State! We played our first Thursday night Sun Belt game on national television, thanks to ESPNU, and came out victorious.
What made this win even more spectacular? It was over our long-term rival Georgia Southern, who was undefeated in the Sun Belt until this game. In this historic 31-13 win, Taylor Lamb threw two TD’s and racked up 200 plus passing yards, and Marcus Cox rushed for 83 yards. The Mountaineers defense also had two interceptions, making an excellent display of interrupting the Eagles run game. In light of the victory of this game, App State has become FBS bowl eligible!
Another fact to consider is how the Mountaineers gave the Clemson Tigers twice the battle that Miami did. Miami was shut out, while the Mountaineers fought a hard game with an early interception in the first, ending 41-10. At halftime of the Miami game, the score was 42-0, already more than the total score for the entire Appalachian-Clemson game.
The ‘Neers have two shutout 49-0 victories this season against Howard and Old Dominion, and has held every other rival to less than 20 points. App State beat the top ranked offense going into last week (GSU), and held them to half as many yards and points as normal. This has brought the Mountaineers to a 6-1 record, with their only loss being out of conference to one of the best nationally ranked teams, Clemson. Also, the Mountaineers are first in the Sun Belt and have already played their hardest Sun Belt opponent this season. This Saturday’s matchup versus Troy should prove no different than the others.
App State has truly become an impressive, well-oiled machine. We are operating with a Top 25 offense and no. 5 nationally ranked defense this season going into Week eight.
