Atypical is a Netflix original show about an 18-year-old high school senior, named Sam, who is trying to jump into the dating world for the first time in his life. Not only does he face the normal obstacles of trying to get into a relationship (like we all do), but he is also on the autism spectrum, which makes his quest for love a little harder.

When a friend told me the plot of this show, I could not wait to get home and watch it. Coming from someone who has two family members with autism, I was SO happy that Netflix came out with a show that exhibited the problems individuals with autism face on a daily basis.

Not only do you follow Sam throughout the show, but you also see into the lives of his dedicated parents, Doug and Elsa, along with his strong-willed, sarcastic, protective, track-star younger sister, Casey.

You also get to enjoy the company of Sam’s hilariously inappropriate friend, Zahid, who desperately tries to help Sam “get the chicks.”

Not only is Atypical extremely funny, heart-warming, and even educational (due to Sam’s obsession with penguins), but it’s also extremely eye-opening. Although Sam is on the higher-functioning end of the autism spectrum, you still get a peek into what the lives of individuals with autism are like.

I’ve always felt that it was important to be nice to everyone because you never know what they’re dealing with, and I feel like Atypical supports that mindset in the perfect way.

The first season is already up on Netflix, and the rumored release date for season 2 is in August 2018. Therefore, I recommend not speeding through the whole first season in one day… which is exactly what I did.
