Power to the Greeks

The health benefits of greek yogurt are widespread. It is loaded with vitamins, good-for-you bacteria, calcium and tons of protien. Brands like Fage, Chobani and Oikos offer up to 20 grams of protein in a typical 6-ounce serving- that’s the equivalent of 2 or 3 ounces of meat. Just what exactly is greek yogurt? It is regular yogurt that has been strained to remove all the whey, leaving the texture a combination of yogurt and cheese. This is what makes greek yogurt so flexible. The texture and mild sour-cream-esque flavor allow many healthier subsititions including…

1 Cup of Sour Cream= 1 Cup of Greek yogurt

1 Cup of Oil= 3/4 Cup of Greek Yogurt

1 Cup of Butter= 1/4 Cup Greek Yogurt + 1/2 Cup Butter

1 Cup Mayonaise= 1 Cup Greek Yogurt

1 Cup Cream Cheese= 1 Cup Greek Yogurt

1 Cup Buttermilk= 2/3 Cup Greek Yogurt + 1/4 Cup Buttermilk

Here is a recipe that uses Greek Yogurt to make Guacamole creamier:

1 clove garlic, minced

1/4 cup nonfat plain Greek yogurtt
