5 New Girl Power Songs You Didn’t Know You Needed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

You know those timeless, old songs that we used to belt out at home from our pink or purple boombox:

  • Cher’s “Believe”
  • Britney’s “Stronger” and “Hit Me One More Time”
  • The Spice Girl’s “Wannabe”
  • Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”
  • Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive”
  • Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like A Woman”
  • Aretha Franklin’s “Respect”

Or, maybe some of the new ones that you’d belt out in the car alone or with your girls with the windows down or in the bus with your teammates on the way to an away game in High School:

  • Beyoncé’s “Run the World (Girls),” “Diva” and “Single Ladies”
  • Kelis’s “Milkshake”
  • Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” and “Rich Girl”
  • The Cheetah Girls’ “Cinderella,” “Cheetah Sisters” and “Girlfriend”
  • Jordin Sparks’s “I Am Woman”
  • Christina Aguilera’s “Fighter”
  • Taylor Swift’s “We’re Never Getting Back Together” and “Shake It Off”

There’s definitely more, but you get the idea.

In honor of the “A Celebration of Feminism” here at App State, here’s five fairly new girl power songs to add to your already-full reservoir or Spotify playlist (wherever it is that you put them). By new, we mean that they came out within the past year. Regardless, they’ll be sure to make you feel like the empowered collegiette that you are.

Demi Lovato’s “Confident”

Even if you’re not confident yet and you can’t really relate to this song, you’ll feel like you are. You’ll feel like you exude confidence. And, who knows? After listening to it a few times, a little confidence might rub off on you. Try it now!

Ariana Grande’s “Focus”

You probably heard of this one too, especially after Nicki Minaj (or whomever it was) said that they couldn’t understand a single word Grande sang. When you listen to it, “focus on” the chorus and look up the rest of the lyrics, you’ll be singing right along with her and want that one boy you’re crushing on to “Focus” on you. (Puns intended.)

Hailee Steinfeld’s “Love Myself”

Not only does this allude to pleasuring yourself – Don’t say “Ew.” It’s not gross. It’s your body. Listen to it. Get to know it. Love it. That simple message is what the song is all about. Well, not literally, but loving yourself in general … in every sense. Loving yourself before anyone else can (who’s not fam or your BFF, that is). Plus, it’s super catchy and super easy to sing along to. Just don’t go posting these lyrics on Instagram.

Meghan Trainor’s “No”

Trainor first debuted this song on Snapchat as she sang it A Cappella in her limousine with her publicist. (If you’re not following her, you might want to add “MTRAIN.”) Her singing the song got her fans interested, and some of us just *had* to look up the song on YouTube, only to find out that it is her new song and *had* to add the song to our Spotify playlist and play it 2345467 times – no seriously. It’s that good. See for yourself!

If you’ve ever had a guy keep trying to get you to hang out but you weren’t that interested, you’ll understand and love it, too. It’s catchy, easy to memorize and just all-around great.

Ariana Grande’s “Dangerous Woman”

This is another one of Grande’s songs that you can’t really understand, but once you look of up the lyrics, you’ll want to play it again and again and again. Because yes, you’ll watch it through the first time if only for the sheer fact that that girl has some mad vocals. She’ll give you chills as she sings it A Cappella … by herself … looking like a bada** in a leather suit. But, don’t take our word for it. Listen to it yourself!

Happy listening!
