14 Times Wednesday Addams was the Spirit Animal I Needed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

As I’m sitting here watching The Addams Family Values and reliving my childhood, I realize that Wednesday Addams has the best snide, straightforward and dramatic remarks…ever.

Then, I realize I probably come off as none of those things. I’m not snide. I’m not straightforward. I’m not dramatic (although I’d like to think I can be sometimes). More than that, I’m indecisive and beat every leaf off the bush as opposed to beating around the bush. Besides, unlike Wednesday, I barely even know myself.

But I’m growing up. I just got over my first serious heartbreak. And after my heartbreak, I have realized that you have to focus on yourself because at the end of the day, the only person who can pick you back up is you. (Of course, I, like Wednesday, had the steadfast support of my family as I hope you do.) Thus, before you can enter into a new relationship, you need to or should become fiercely independent.

Miss Wednesday Addams is fiercely independent. She does her own thing, and everyone loves her for it, even if it’s a little bit out there. And that’s what I want. I want to be fiercely independent. I want to have my life together and be organized. I want to rock black as often and as well as her. As Demi Lovato said about The Addams Family during commercials, “They’re weird, and they own it.” And, what can I say? I’m weird, too. But boy, do they own it, especially Wednesday Adams.  So here are a few times I think Wednesday is fiercely independent, doesn’t care what people think, embodies whom she is and absolutely owned it.

When she was in tune with her emotions…

When she straight up called people out

And questioned them like a boss…

When she knew she didn’t need a man…

When she corrected people in the best way...

When she knew how to act…

And what was appropriate…before it was cool.

When she tried to act like someone she wasn’t…and couldn’t…

When she could think on her feet…

When she didn’t care what anyone else thought…

When She composed herself like a champ

When she wasn’t afraid of what she wanted…

When she knew whom she was…

When she had the moves…

So again, as Demi said, “Be the Addams family you wish to see in the world.”
