Fall is here!!

And while some of you may be lamenting the loss of the warm weather, it’s now high time for one of my favorite things to do: layer, layer, and layer some more. Traditionally, layering’s been that semi-nerdy thing your mother insisted you did, usually involving some torturous itchy wool sweater, but don’t worry; that was the poison, I’ve got the remedy (Jason Mraz moment, anyone?).

Let’s start with the basics:

First off, an oversized sweater. Buying a men’s size small usually does the trick. This is one of my favorite sweaters and it’s pretty baggy on me, so I cinched it with a thin belt to avoid looking too much like a Mary-Kate-mess. Next up: tights and my black pencil skirt. I love wearing tights in the fall and they make your legs look lean and class up any outfit. The tight skirt creates a nice contrast with the loose sweater but it’s the same color so it keeps the outfit unified. Finally, I threw on my new Converse Moccasins (yes, they make those), white knee socks (bunched, never extended, this isn’t junior high), and my mustard yellow suuuper long scarf. Topping it all off with my trusty denim jacket, I was ready to brave the unpredictable New England cold while still maintaining my New York swag; Brooklyn, I do it all for you.

Accessories:

I kept the class going with my trusty leather satchel and hair pulled into a bun. The earrings I chose were my ring earrings (yes, they’re literal rings) and I had basic cat eye with liquid liner.

Watch Out!

It’s really easy to get carried away with the layering, but think always keep the three T’s in mind: texture, time, and true. Try to mix up different textures of clothing to keep an outfit interesting: denim with knit, cotton with silk, suede with leather. Sticking to one kind of fabric may be tempting, but it makes the outfit lose its variety. Time is important as well. If you have a 9am class, maybe the smoky eye and coral red lipstick can wait? It’s not only a question of whether or not you can rock it, but whether or not you should. And lastly, (it’s Disney-cheesy, but I love the classics), be true to yourself. If short skirts and baggy sweaters aren’t your thing, that’s fine there are tons of other options. Just remember, the biggest part of dressing well is walking well in what you’re dressed in, and that only comes with you being comfortable in your clothes, so rep you! There’s no one better-dressed for the job.

That’s all for now! Stay tuned to learn about one Fall must-have you’ll be wishing you did!!
