Campus Profile: The Career Center

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Amherst chapter.

Every now and then, we like to highlight a group of people in the Amherst Community that contribute to our lives in a unique way.  With many people hunting for internships and research opportunities, we figured it would be a fine time to bring attention to a resource on campus that could help.

The Career Center is the large yellow building between Morgan Hall and the Triangle that holds the answer to the most important question: “What should I do with my life?”  There are specialists in every field from business to technology to medicine to the humanities. Their website lists the name of the advisor who is experienced in your chosen field.  If you just want a relaxed consultation, you can simply visit during their drop-in hours. If you already have questions, send them a quick email and make an appointment.

The Career Center also realizes that students may not feel comfortable showing their raw cover letters and resumes to professional career advisors.  That’s why they train Peer Career Advisors, fellow Amherst College Students, to have drop in hours at the Career Center and in Frost library to coach students during their career building process.  By having these students approve your resume, you can have your resume posted on Quest, an independent job search program only for students approved by the Career Center.  They can also give advice on how to utilize the alumni network and which workshops put on by the Career Center would be most useful to you.

As a student who only started using the Career Center the second semester of her junior year, I highly recommend students take advantage of their resources earlier rather than later.  The people who work there are absolutely lovely.  There’s the office manager, Ms. Kathy Glista, who will glad slide you a piece of Dove chocolate for after your phone interview (that they can arrange to be conducted in a private room). Or the business career advisor, Ms. Stephanie Hockman, who will gladly accept your hugs after getting the job you always wanted.

If you have a bit of confusion of where your path after Amherst College should lead you, I truly hope you will visit the Career Center.  For their dedication to assisting the Amherst community, we are happy to have the Career Center as this week’s Campus Profile.
