A Winter Jacket Guide for non-New Englanders

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Here in Washington, DC we might not get the bitter coldness and multiple feet of snow that New Englanders are used to. However, it does get chilly! For those west-coasters and southerners, “winter” on the east coast seems to be a foreign word, but don’t fret over how to stay warm during the cold winter months. Her Campus American University has you covered! Winter isn’t scary; in fact it is quite fun! Here is a guide to the best winter jackets for your daily winter activity.

1. Super Stylish: The Wool Pea Coat

The wool pea coat is fashionable and warm, which is the perfect winter combo! This red Tommy Hilfiger coat features toggles, a stylish alternative to buttons. The back of the jacket features a stylish hood and a form-enhancing hemline. This Forever 21 coat provides a more affordable option that still gives a stylish statement with a wool belt and hidden snaps at the bottom to keep you warm. The two slanted pockets in the front give a perfect spot to slip your hands when they get chilly!

Columbia’s women’s Veloca Point Jacket is the ideal ski jacket, perfect for all of your winter athletics. The jacket is lightly insulated with a thermal reflective liner to help keep your body warm, but also dry from any sweat. Don’t worry this jacket is still chic as it has as a shirttail hemline to give it a feminine fit.

3. Fuzzy Fleece: The Denali Hoodie

Northface’s classic Denali Hoodie Fleece Jacket is essential for daily travel in DC and even around American’s campus. This quick on-the-go jacket provides warmth and comfort from its cozy Polartec technology fleece. Features include a fleece-lined hood, perfect for windy days or the occasional snow flurry. The Napoleon chest pocket provides a perfect place to stash an ID or Smartrip card for hands-free exploration.

Cost: $199 with hood, $179 without

Colors: Brilliant blue, graphite grey, white heather (as pictured), passion pink and more!

4. Transitional Temperatures: The Trench Coat

DC weather is not exactly the most predictable. Some fall days feel like the middle of January, while others feel like early September. In order to have a perfect balance of warm, but not overheating, try a trench coat. Trench coats are perfect for these transitional temperatures and are multi-seasonal, working the best in the fall and spring. London Fog’s Quilted Flap Double Breasted Trench Coat comes just above the knees and is fitted with a removable belt and belted cuffs. The water resistant materials and a fully lined interior help keep you dry during a little sprinkle. The quilted flaps on the back of the coat give it added style!
