What It’s Like to Have a New Celebrity Crush

If you’re like me, you have a lot of feelings about a LOT of celebrities. You may think you’ve maxed out on the number of hot celebs you love, until you get bitten by that celebrity crush love bug again… and it hits you hard. Here are some ways to tell that you have a brand new celebrity crush.

You can’t stop doing “research.”

You’re Google Imaging all throughout your marketing lecture. You’re reading their Twitter and Instagram better than your Economics textbook. You’re spending hours on YouTube watching old interviews, clips from their movies and shows, or, in my case, watching “Glee” songs without context. My current celebrity crush is Grant Gustin, currently starring as Barry Allen on The Flash, and he used to be on Glee. He sings and dances! Sold. I really did my research on my celeb crush, Alexander Skarsgard, realizing he is in the beginning of Zoolander. A lot of time and effort goes into celeb crush research, and it’s a sure sign that you have more than a casual appreciation. (Stalking has too negative a connotation, in my opinion.)

You tell all of your friends.

This is kind of like telling your friends you’re dating someone new, except it’s a person you have never met before and only enjoy looking at for long periods of time on the internet. So now, you’re telling your friends all about the new crush, trivia facts, and reasons you are perfect for each other. For example, Grant Gustin dressed as Marty McFly from “Back to the Future” for Halloween. Back to the Future is one of my all-time favorite movies, so this naturally means we are soulmates. Double points if you get your friends obsessed, too.

Your schedule becomes focused on your new crush’s show/movie/album.

It’s your favorite part of your day or week when you get to chill out and see your new bae. All you look forward to is the next episode/video/chance you’ll get to “hang out.” Just go ahead and ask me how excited I am to see Jamie Dornman in the new season of The Fall in January. I usually hate the month of January, but this is giving me something to look forward to. I bet you thought I was going to say “Fifty Shades” I’m excited for that, too, I won’t lie. But mainly because of this sweater:

You contemplate changing your phone background/computer desktop/Facebook cover photo/Twitter header.

This is the ultimate test of dedication to your celebrity crush. My lock screen has been David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson for at least 2 years, so it would take someone pretty special to change. For awhile, it was this photo of Mark Wahlberg (then Marky Mark.) There was a brief period over the summer where Alexander Skarsgard was my cover photo, which means a lot. It’s just nice to see your favorite celebs a few times a day.

Other celebrity crushes seem tame compared to your current spiral.

I like to break my levels of celebrity crush into tiers. For example, there was a solid week of this summer where all I did was watch Ethan Hawke movies, just like Shark Week, but Hawke Week. To be fair, I was gearing up for “Boyhood.” But we’ll call this a “moment-” when you can’t stop thinking about said celebrity for a short period of time, but then you move on with the rest of your life/crushes. This pales in comparison to my Alexander Skarsgard ”situation” that occurred while I watched all of True Blood, from July to August. (#RIP) The “situation” lasts longer than a moment and is a bigger commitment to said celebrity. Both “moments” and “situations” can include a “spiral” – a worrisome period of time where all you can do is think/talk/read about said celebrity. Situations/spirals then evolve into “constants.” These are celebrities who you have always loved/will see any movie they are in/will continue to love for eternity. Some of my constants include Mark Wahlberg, Adam Levine, Duchovny, Jensen Ackles, RDJ… the list goes on. We’ll see if this Grant Gustin situation evolves into a constant. (I’m recovering from a spiral mainly brought on by this video.) We’ll see who hits me next, but for now – all eyes on The Flash!
