TV Review: Kourtney and Khloe Take the Hamptons & House of DVF

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Being a reality TV geek, I love the autumn season because I look forward to new shows coming on. So, I have been waiting patiently for the November 2 premieres of the Kardashian spinoff, Kourtney and Khloe Take the Hamptons and Diane von Furstenberg’s show House of DVF.

After watching them both, I had similar reactions and the word I used to describe that reaction was unexpected. Both shows had different vibes, premises, and overall just gave–what I thought–to be unexpected first episodes.

With “Kourtney and Khloe Take the Hamptons,” I was expecting a very positive and uplifting episode, being that everybody is essentially starting new chapters in their lives. Khloe was dating rapper French Montana at the time, Kourtney was expecting her third child and Scott had the opportunity to cope with the recent deaths of both of his parents in his hometown. But this time, he travelled and dealt with these problems with his own family.

But that didn’t happen. It seems that Kourtney’s pregnancy hormones were taking over a little too much and that caused her lash out on Scott, which lead to what I’d like to call strangling. We all know from the many years of viewing Kardashians’ shows that Scott has his own demons he is constantly working on. However, that doesn’t mean Kourtney needed to ban him from their summer home property because he wants to go into the city to spend time with some of his old buddies.  That caused some serious tension between the always-bickering couple.

Kourtney was even giving her favorite sister the cold shoulder because of new relationship with rapper French Montana. To me, what it seemed like is Kourtney may not be sold on Koko’s new man. So when Khloe tells Kourtney she is taking a three-day trip to South Africa to watch French perform at the MTVAfrican Music Awards, she isn’t too keen on the idea. Khloe felt that she has every right to go and she would only be gone for three days. When Khloe reunited with Montana after his performance, they tried putting in a call to Kourtney but she didn’t answer.

This premiere isn’t exactly what I thought it was going to be. I hope that for upcoming episodes, Kourtney takes her attitude down a notch and starts to become more sensitive to her partner’s and sister’s feelings considering that they have both had a very stressful year. So we’ll see what happens…

As for Diane von Furstenberg’s show, House of DVF, I was expecting something much more different than what it was.  The princess and infamous fashion mogul and her team are on the hunt for a normal girl to represent the brand and become a global brand ambassador for the company. Over the course of the show, they will be trained in different aspects of the business, attend various events, and meet countless people in the fashion industry.

Diane’s team picked ten girls–but immediately narrow it down to eight. These girls range from pageant queens, fashion students, fashion bloggers, stylists, photographers and more.

My first impression of these girls was that some of them didn’t seem like they’re really passionate about why they’re there.  I felt as though some of the contestants came off as immature. Contestants Amanda Schauer and Kier Mellour stuck out to me because of their vast experiences as fashion stylists and bloggers as well as their educational experience. After the contestants worked their first event, The DVF Awards, contestant Rhianna went to the bathroom claiming that she is lightheaded and ended up passing out.

Bottom line, it’s going to be an rollercoaster of emotions this season as these girls strive to get to the top and become the first ever Global Brand Ambassador for Diane Von Furstenberg.
