Trick or Treat: Choosing the Right Halloween Candy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Halloween in college is a completely different experience for most collegiettes compared to celebrating the holiday at home. Students at American can take advantage of many DC Halloween activities such as trick-or-treating down Embassy Row and going to local haunted hayrides. The caveat of being on your own during this holiday is that your mom won’t be monitoring your candy intake (I’m not the only girl who got dirty looks from my mom when I had candy for breakfast on November 1, right?).

The thing about Halloween is that we all know that we are going to indulge a little. Life is too short not to eat candy! But, we can be mindful of how much and what we are eating. In anticipation of your night filled with festive parties and candy accumulation, keep in mind that you should have dinner before you go out on Halloween. You will feel more full and will be less likely to unconsciously eat candy. Also, don’t look past accepting fruit from your trick-or-treating adventures; and bobbing for apples is recommended! Here are some types of candy that are tricks (bad for you) and treats (a-okay to eat!).

Snickers: Trick. This candy bar is loaded with mainly sugar and calories! 300 calories per serving.

Smarties: Treat! 25 calories per serving.

Mounds: Trick. Loaded with fat and sugar, 250 calories per serving.

York Peppermint Patty: Treat! Refreshing and low in fat, 140/60 calories per serving large/snack size.

Skittles: Trick. 47 grams of sugar, which equals ten teaspoons of sugar. One bag is 250 calories per serving.

Starburst: Treat! Chewy, low fat, low sugar. 130 calories for 9 pieces.

Butterfinger: Trick. Any candy that sticks to your teeth can’t be a healthy option. This candy can trigger even more cravings, and it has 270 calories per serving.

Candy Corn: Treat! Relatively low in fat and sugar, 140 calories per 19 pieces.

Have a healthy and safe Halloween!
