Top 10 Valentine’s Day Movies

Whether you’re riding solo or coupled up for Valentine’s Day, here are 10 movies that will get you in the mood for this day of love and romance. No matter your taste, style or preferred genre, these movies are sure to spice up your life. Sit back, relax, and enjoy!

1. The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009)

This movie tells of a non-traditional love that spans the length of childhood, adolescence, and eventually adulthood. Feeling like she’s known him her whole life, Clare Abshire falls in love with Henry DeTamble, who to her surprise is a time traveler. Henry cannot control how, when, or why he time travels, which makes for a difficult union between the two.

2. A Walk to Remember (2002)

No Valentine’s Day movie list would be complete without a Nicholas Sparks movie adaption. A Walk to Remember takes the fusion of the “typical” good girl and bad boy union to a whole different level. As part of Landon Carter’s punishment for playing a life-threatening prank on another student, he is assigned to be a part of a school play, where he meets the small town reverend’s daughter, Jamie Sullivan. Things for them start out shaky, but along the way they fall in love. But their love is interrupted by a heart-breaking diagnosis.

3. The Notebook (2004)

The Notebook is another Nicholas Sparks adaptation that rivals the likes of “The Titanic” for this generation. Noah and Allie come from two separate worlds; she’s of high class society, and he’s no comparison. After a summer together, they are inseparable. But Allie’s parents do not approve of the relationship, so in return they move away. After years of struggling to find a love like theirs again, Noah and Allie must choose whether or not that one summer was worth it.

4. Can’t Buy Me Love (1987) / Love Don’t Cost a Thing (2003)

If you’re in the mood for a romantic comedy, then Can’t Buy Me Love is for you. When nerdy boy, Ronald Miller (played by Patrick Dempsey) pays one of the most popular girls in school, Cindy, to pretend to be his girlfriend, he got more than he could ever dream of. In the midst of the deal, Cindy begins to fall for Ronald. But in the wake of his popularity, Ronald risks losing Cindy. But if you’re looking for a more contemporary movie, check out the re-make, Love Don’t Cost a Thing, featuring Nick Cannon and Christina Milian.

5. Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

Destiny: the one word that describes the love between Jamal and Latika. Fighting to get of the slums of India his whole life, Jamal finally gets the chance of a lifetime to be on a version of the game show, “Who Wants to be a Millionaire”, and try to claim his love for Latika. Ever since they were kids growing up in the slums, Jamal always protected Latika. After being separated for so long and searching for her his whole life, he sees this show as a way to bring her to him.

6. Dear John (2010)

It only took two weeks for John and Savanna to fall in love; maybe it was love at first sight. But if you’re a hopeless romantic, this one’s for you. When Sergeant John Tyree and UNC student, Savanna Curtis meet there is an instant connection between the two. After two weeks of an intense, passionate romance, John completes his enlistment and Savannah returns back to school, in which they agree to write letters to each other every day. But their love is tested by the attacks of September 11th.

7. Love & Basketball (2000)

This one is for all the sports fans. When childhood best friends turned lovers, Monica and Quincy fall for each other it’s more than just hormonal feeling involved. The love and passion both of them have for the game of basketball help to fuel their relationship. This one-on-one game comes with high stakes riding for both teams.

8. P.S. I Love You (2007)

After Holly marries the love of her life, Gerry, he suddenly falls ill, which takes his life. Holly becomes so devastated, but without her knowing, Gerry is the only one who can help her. Before he died Gerry left Holly a series of notes in order to deal with her grief and moving on in life without him. With Gerry’s help, Holly embarks on a journey to embrace and celebrate life.

9. The Proposal (2009)

In order to gain promotion within his company, Andrew agrees to “marry” his boss, Margaret so that she does not get deported back to Canada. With the INS on their backs, they venture to Andrew’s home place of Alaska to “bond” as a couple. This romantic comedy features some of today’s greatest actors in Hollywood: Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds and Betty White.

10. Brown Sugar (2002)

Just like the title, this movie is sweet with the likings of hip-hop and urban love. When music executive, Dre and magazine editor, Sidney start to fall in love, hip-hop serves as the backdrop for the foundation of their love. But when friendship starts to turn into love, the timing of this particular pairing is put to the challenge.
